Job summary

EXP is seeking a Traffic Control Designer/Drafter to support utility construction projects in the Washington, DC metro area. You will prepare site sketches, traffic control plans, DOT applications, and construction documents under supervision with an emphasis on safety and accuracy.

The ideal candidate has an associate degree or technical certification in drafting or engineering, 2+ years TCP/MOT experience, and advanced AutoCAD skills.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree or technical certification in drafting or related field.
  • 2+ years of experience preparing TCP/MOT plans.
  • 3 to 5+ years of traffic control plan development preferred.
  • Experience supporting utility construction in public rights-of-way.
  • Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD.
  • Familiar with MUTCD and TCP standards.
  • Ability to interpret design drawings and permits.
  • Experience with GIS and base mapping.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • ATSSA certifications preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares site sketches, traffic control plans, permit planning and DOT applications.
  • Works with design teams of engineers across disciplines.
  • Generates drawings from scratch or revises them from markups under supervision.
  • Prepares project drawings, calculations, and specifications.
  • Independently completes construction document packages.
  • Uses aerial imagery, GIS, and mapping tools for base maps.

What a day at EXP has in store for you
  • Prepares site sketches, traffic control plans, permit planning and DOT application for a portion or all of a utility construction project at a fast pace environment. Manages and gathers information, data, reports, field notes from work management systems & software.
  • Utilize basic knowledge of utility piping systems & networks
  • Works with dynamic design teams including senior traffic engineers, utility engineers, mechanical engineers, electrical engineers and structural engineers, at a fast and progressive environment
  • Work may include generating drawings from scratch with minimal direction and oversight to revising drawings based on mark-ups from others under a EIT or PE supervision.
  • Prepares project drawings, calculations, and specifications
  • Familiar with all aspects of construction document preparation and capable of independently making design decisions and preparing the construction document package
What Your Experience Looks Like
  • Associate degree, technical certification, or equivalent work experience in drafting, engineering technology, civil engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience preparing Temporary Traffic Control (TCP) or Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) plans for utility or infrastructure projects.
  • 3 to 5+ years of traffic control plan development experience preferred.
  • Experience supporting utility construction activities within public rights-of-way.
  • Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD.
  • Strong understanding of TCP drafting standards, layouts, and symbology.
  • Ability to interpret utility design drawings, permit requirements, work orders, and construction scopes.
  • Working knowledge of MUTCD and traffic control design principles.
  • Ability to create and modify permit-ready traffic control drawings.
  • Experience utilizing aerial imagery, GIS mapping resources, and jurisdictional mapping tools to develop accurate base maps.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and time-management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet permitting deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience preparing TCPs for projects within Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia.
  • Familiarity with DDOT, VDOT, MDOT SHA, and local county permitting requirements.Utility industry experience supporting electric, gas, water, sewer, telecommunications, or fiber‑optic construction.
  • ATSSA Traffic Control Technician (TCT), Traffic Control Supervisor (TCS), or Traffic Control Design Specialist (TCDS) certification preferred.
  • Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Adobe Acrobat.
  • Electronic permitting and document management systems.
The pay range for this role is $20 to $35 an hour.

Actual compensation packages are based on several factors that are unique to each candidate, including but not limited to skill set, depth of experience, certifications, and specific work location. This may be different in other locations due to differences in the cost of labor.
