Job summary

Helix Traffic Solutions, LLC is seeking a Traffic Control Apprentice to maintain flow of traffic around construction zones and ensure safety for workers and the public. The role emphasizes safety and following guidelines in an outdoor work setting.

No prior traffic control experience is required as company training will be provided. The position involves outdoor conditions, physical tasks, and potential travel to various sites across the region.

Qualifications

• Outdoor work in varying weather conditions with safety procedures.
• Stand and walk 8+ hours; lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
• Pre-employment drug screening required.
• Valid driver's license and reliable transportation required.
• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Traffic Control/Flagger Certification provided by the company; prior traffic control experience not required.

Responsibilities

• Control vehicle and pedestrian traffic around work zones using signs, paddles, or flags.
• Set up, maintain, and remove temporary traffic control zones per project requirements and regulations.
• Communicate with drivers to guide traffic and ensure safety.
• Monitor traffic and construction activity to anticipate hazards and respond appropriately.
• Coordinate with supervisors and team members using radios or other communication equipment.
• Adhere to safety protocols and wear PPE.
• Assist with loading/unloading traffic control equipment.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Traffic Control Apprentice is responsible for maintaining the flow of traffic around construction zones, maintenance projects, accidents, or other temporary traffic disruption areas. This role ensures the safety of workers, motorists, and pedestrians by maintaining proper traffic control and following all safety guidelines and regulations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Control vehicle and pedestrian traffic around work zones using handheld signs, paddles, or flags
• Set up, maintain, and remove temporary traffic control work zones including signs, barricades, and cones according to project requirements and regulations
• Communicate clearly with drivers to provide guidance and ensure safe traffic flow
• Monitor traffic and construction activity to anticipate and respond to potential safety hazards
• Coordinate with supervisors and other team members using hand signals, radios, or other communication equipment
• Adhere to all safety protocols, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
• Warn workers when approaching vehicles fail to heed signals to prevent accidents and injuries
• Assist with loading/unloading traffic control equipment as needed
• Perform other work-related duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS/ QUALIFICATIONS:

• Outdoor Work Environment: This is an outdoor, field-based position that requires working in various weather conditions, including sunny, rainy, cold, and changing weather conditions, while following established safety procedures.
• Physical Demands: Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods (8+ hours), lift and carry up to 50 lbs. and perform physical tasks throughout the workday, with or without reasonable accommodation.
• Safety Awareness: Ability to learn, understand, and consistently follow traffic control procedures and safety regulations.
• Communication Skills: Ability to received, understand, and communicate instructions clearly, professionally, and courteously.
• Teamwork: Demonstrate reliability, professionalism, and the ability to work effectively with team members and supervisors.
• Attention to Detail: Maintain focus and awareness of surroundings while working near active roadways and moving vehicles.
• Dependability: Report to assigned job sites on time and follow established work schedules.
• Drug Screening: Must be able to successfully complete a pre-employment drug screening.
• Transportation: Must possess a valid driver's license and have reliable transportation to assigned work locations.
• Education: High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Training & Certification: Traffic Control/Flagger Certification provided by the company. Previous traffic control experience is not required.

EXPERIENCE:

• No prior experience required; traffic control experience preferred.
• Willing to learn and follow safety procedures.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

• Outdoor work environment in and around construction zones
