Job summary

Virginia Tech is seeking a Trades/Utilities Master Mechanic to maintain and repair electrical and mechanical equipment across its facilities. The role requires troubleshooting, safe repairs during emergencies, and strong documentation skills.

Qualifications

  • Ability to read blueprints/technical drawings and maintain records.
  • Proficient in using a computerized facilities work order system.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain, inspect, service and repair electrical and mechanical equipment in assigned buildings.
  • Troubleshoot failures, respond to trouble calls and perform safe repairs.
  • Inspect buildings for safety hazards and complete repairs as needed.
  • Support a healthy work environment and university commitments.

Job Description

Reporting to a Preventive Maintenance Supervisor, the Trades/Utilities Master Mechanic maintains, inspects, services and repairs electrical and mechanical equipment in assigned academic building. This position troubleshoots and repairs any mechanical or electrical failures, responds to trouble calls to shutdown equipment and make repairs in a safe manner, and inspects buildings for safety hazards and repair as needed.

This position is designated Emergency Personnel, which requires employees to report to work during emergency situations and closings.

The incumbent also performs other duties as requested; takes initiative to support a healthy work environment; strives to fulfill the terms in the Standards of Conduct; exemplifies the Virginia Tech Principles of Community; and supports the university’s motto, Ut Prosim (That I May Serve).

Required Qualifications
  • Current Virginia Journey or Master Level license in electrical, plumbing trade or HVAC trades.
  • OR current Journey or Master level licensing agreement (reciprocity) from another jurisdiction (State) as approved by the Virginia Board for Contractors which must be converted within 6 months.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of, and experience at the journey level in electrical and mechanical trades in an industrial, commercial or institutional trades environment.
  • Working knowledge of blueprints, technical drawings and/or sketches.
  • Recordkeeping experience.
  • Ability to learn and use the computerized Facilities work order system to enter time, obtain, create and edit work orders, and request materials.
  • Must have excellent communication skills; be able to understand, comprehend and follow directions in the workplace, have good team work skills and work independently without direct supervision.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a large commercial or educational setting.
  • Experience with an online work order management system.
  • Previous lead worker and/or supervisory experience.
