Job summary

Under general supervision of the Public Works Director, the trades manager ensures proper operation and maintenance of the Pueblo of Santa Ana’s buildings, facilities and residential homes, overseeing plumbing, electrical, carpentry and HVAC and supervising trades staff. This role requires five years of trade experience, including supervisory responsibilities.

Certifications in HVAC, plumbing, boiler operation or electrical may be required.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED; 5 years trade experience in construction management or building maintenance.
  • Two years supervisory experience.
  • Certification in HVAC, Plumbing, Boiler Operator, or Electrical.
  • Associates degree in mechanical, electrical or building maintenance preferred.
  • Pre-employment drug/alcohol screen and background investigation including motor vehicle check; NM driver’s license required.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect buildings, facilities and equipment for damage and oversee repairs.
  • Oversee maintenance and remodels of buildings, facilities and homes.
  • Coordinate the maintenance and preservation of Public Works equipment.
  • Promote workplace safety and enforce policies and procedures.
  • Read blueprints and sketches; interpret them for work.
  • Direct, supervise and evaluate assigned staff.
  • Interview applicants and participate in hiring decisions.
  • Initiate employee performance reviews.
  • Maintain inventory and order equipment and supplies.
  • Ensure effective customer and employee relations.

Position Summary

Under general supervision of the Public Works Director, the trades manager ensures proper operation and maintenance of the Pueblo of Santa Ana’s buildings, facilities and residential homes. Responsibilities generally include plumbing, electrical, carpentry and HVAC and supervision of the various trades professionals, apprentices and the custodial function in the Public Works Department.

  • Inspect buildings and homes, facilities and equipment for damage assuring that repairs are made.
  • Oversee maintenance and/or remodel of buildings, facilities and homes.
  • Coordinate the maintenance and preservation of Public Works equipment.
  • Promote workplace safety.
  • Oversee installation and maintenance of heating and cooling units.
  • Oversee installation and maintenance of electrical systems and equipment.
  • Read and interpret blueprints and sketches.
  • Maintain inventory and orders equipment and supplies.
  • Direct, supervise and evaluate the work of assigned employees.
  • Interview applicants and make hiring recommendations.
  • Initiate employee performance reviews.
  • Enforce Public Works polices, practices and procedures.
  • Conduct staff meetings and training.
  • Assure effective customer and employee relations.
  • Adhere to Santa Ana Pueblo’s Policies and Procedures.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED. Must have 5 years trade experience within construction management, general construction or building maintenance including two years supervisory experience. Prior to start date, must have obtained certification in any one of the following, HVAC, Plumbing, Boiler Operator, or Electrical. Associates degree in mechanical, electrical or building maintenance is preferred but not required. Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screen and background investigation including a motor vehicle check. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico driver’s license and be insurable under the Pueblo’s insurance.

  • Knowledge of plumbing and electrical, mechanical and maintenance systems.
  • Knowledge of general safety rules and procedures including reporting requirements.
  • Knowledge of general construction and maintenance.
  • Ability to lead, supervise and direct the work of others.
  • Ability to plan and schedule work.
  • Ability to use a computer for scheduling, budgeting and reporting.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment.
  • Ability to operate and maintain equipment used in construction projects.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints or schematics needed.
  • Ability to maintain an equipment and supply inventories and control loss.
  • Ability to establish and implement a preventive maintenance program.
  • Ability to interact and maintain good working relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk; and stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee occasionally is required to sit. Considerable physical activity; heavy physical work; heavy moving, lifting, pushing, or pulling of objects up to 50 pounds is a primary part of the job. Use two-person lift when lifting more than 50 pounds.

Work is generally performed in an indoor and outdoor setting where exposure to unpleasant odors, dust, dirt, fumes, and chemicals may occur. Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which may require wearing safety-toe shoes, safety goggles, gloves , or protective face shields.
