Job summary

Town of Minden is seeking a Town Maintenance Specialist to help care for parks, facilities and roadways through custodial tasks, landscaping, and event support. The role involves varied duties across buildings and grounds, with emphasis on quality workmanship and teamwork.

A safety sensitive position with possible weekend or holiday shifts for special events, and required compliance with screenings. High School diploma or GED and two years of related experience are required.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED and two years of experience with landscaping, buildings, streets, and heavy equipment operation; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain roadways and other paved areas by cleaning surfaces, laying and raking asphalt, and striping and marking pavement.
  • Mow, trim, edge, fertilize, and water parks, playing fields and landscaped areas; weed, prune, mulch, fertilize and spray trees, plants and shrubbery.
  • Install, repair and maintain irrigation systems; read blueprints; prepare as-built sketches.
  • Set up and tear down for special events; install and remove banners and decorations.
  • Drive Town vehicles and equipment to perform varied tasks related to job duties.
  • Collect residential and commercial waste and recycling from various receptacles and locations.
  • Perform custodial duties: cleaning floors, carpets, restrooms; dusting and polishing surfaces.
  • Perform basic building repairs and graffiti removal; maintain drinking fountains.

Job description

Performing a variety of tasks from custodial duties, to landscaping maintenance, to assisting with the preparation and clean-up for special events, and more, the Town Maintenance Specialist is an important part of the team that keeps the parks, facilities, and roadways of the Town of Minden clean, safe, and functional for the enjoyment of town residents and community members. Primary Objectives

Performs intermediate work performing skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the care and maintenance of buildings, facilities and grounds; performing sanitation duties; performs related tasks as apparent or assigned.

This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to random and pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.

  1. Maintains and repairs roadways and other paved areas by cleaning surfaces, laying and raking asphalt and striping and marking pavement.
  2. Mows, trims, edges, fertilizes, and waters parks, playing fields and other landscaped areas; weeds, prunes, mulches, fertilizes, and sprays trees, plants and shrubbery; prepares soil for planting; seeds and re-sods lawn areas; plants trees, seedlings and shrubs; applies pesticides and fertilizers.
  3. Installs, repairs and maintains irrigation systems; adjusts, repairs and replaces timing mechanisms; reads and interprets standard plans, specifications, blueprints and schematics; prepares as-built sketches.
  4. Performs set-ups and tear-downs for special events; installs and removes banners and decorations.
  5. Drives a variety of Town vehicles and equipment to perform various tasks related to job duties.
  6. Collects residential and commercial waste and recycling from a variety of receptacles and locations.
  7. Performs building custodial duties: sweeps, mops, scrubs, and polishes floors; sweeps, vacuums and spot cleans carpeted areas; dusts and polishes furniture and woodwork; dusts counters, windowsills, window blinds and similar fixtures; washes doors, windows, walls, ceilings, window blinds and furniture; polishes metalwork; cleans and disinfects restrooms; restocks restroom supplies as necessary.
  8. Cleans lighting fixtures and replaces bulbs/tubes.
  9. Empties, cleans and lines waste receptacles and disposes of trash.
  10. Performs basic building repair work; may paint facilities and perform graffiti removal; maintains drinking fountains.
  11. Maintains vehicles, equipment, materials and supplies in proper condition.
  12. Observes safe working practices, including maintaining storage areas in a safe condition.
  13. Maintains open communication with coworkers and management team in person or via Town-issued cell phones.
  14. Answers questions and provides standard information to the public.
  15. Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team.
  16. Completes basic records of work performed and materials used utilizing software such as Microsoft Word or Excel, as well as timely completion of time sheets.
  17. Represents the County with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public.
  18. Contributes effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives, and activities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School diploma or GED and two (2) years of experience with aspects of landscaping, buildings, streets, and heavy equipment operation and repair; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES
  • ValidClass B Commercial Driver's License with air brake endorsement within one (1) year of date of employment.
  • Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 10 Certification within one (1) year of date of employment.
  • CPR and First Aid certification within six (6) months of date of employment.

  • Work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to outdoor weather conditions; frequently requires exposure to vibration; occasionally requires exposure to wet/humid conditions (non-weather), working in high/precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to bloodborne pathogens (may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment).
