Job summary

Stellantis is seeking a skilled Toolmaker to join our manufacturing operations in New Jersey. The role involves producing tools, fixtures and gauges for automotive production, interpreting blueprints and specifications, and using CNC and conventional machine tools to craft precise components.

You will test tools, ensure tolerances, and work from engineering drawings to support line objectives. The position requires an apprenticeship background or equivalent experience, strong problem solving,

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • Basic knowledge of mathematics, algebra and physics
  • 4 years of combined experience and training similar to an apprenticeship program as a Tool Maker or Tool and Die Maker; OR union apprenticeship completion; OR 8 years of Tool Maker experience; OR 5 years with 3 years in related trade
  • Experience as a Toolmaker in a manufacturing environment

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate lathes, milling machines and grinders to cut, bore, grind or shape parts to prescribed dimensions and finishes
  • Read blueprints, layouts or specifications to plan sequences of operations
  • Test and inspect tools to ensure conformance to design and function
  • Install and maintain tooling and crossbars; cam rollers, suction cups, vacuum lines, and tooling aides
  • Work from drawings to fabricate and assemble jigs, fixtures and tools
  • Set up and adjust machines for program and parameter changes
  • Verify dimensions and tolerances with measuring instruments such as calipers and micrometers
  • Perform incidental tasks to complete larger projects
  • Lift and move parts using proper equipment and safe practices

Job description

Toolmakers are highly skilled employees responsible for producing tools and specialized parts and devicesused on manufacturing machines in an automotive manufacturing plant. The work requires practical skilland knowledge as a Toolmaker to analyze specifications, lay out metal stock, set up and operate machinetools, and fit and assemble parts to make and repair cutting tools, jigs, fixtures, gauges and hand tools.The work may require interpreting specifications, blueprints, manufacturers' manuals, sketches or similardocuments. The candidate must have the ability to plan the sequence of operation and materials requiredaccording to knowledge of computer technology, such as computer aided design, CAD, or computer aidedmanufacturing, CAM, to design and create instructions for the manufacture tools. The candidate will berequired to test and inspect the tools that are created to ensure that they are true to the original designand function properly. The candidate must have excellent communication skills and the ability to problemsolve. Candidate must be able to perform incidental tasks as required to complete the larger task.

Basic Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED)

  • 4 years of combined experience and training similar to that required in a bona fide apprenticeshipprogram as a Tool Maker or Tool and Die Maker; OR a U.S. Department of Labor Completion ofApprenticeship Certificate as a Tool Maker or Tool and Die Maker; OR eight (8) years of documentedTool Maker or Tool and Die Maker experience; OR five (5) years of documented Tool Maker or Tooland Die Maker experience and three (3) years in a related trade
  • Experience as a Toolmaker in a manufacturing environment
Ability, with or without reasonable accommodation, to:
  • Work any shift and work overtime, including daily, weekends and holidays as required
  • Set-up, service and make program and/or parameter changes to Destackers, Washers, Re-oilers, Exit conveyors, and Racking Systems.
  • Installing and maintaining tooling and crossbars; i.e. cam rollers, suction cups, vacuum lines, and tooling aides.
  • Clearing and preparing line for automatic die set, correcting faults and restarting machine during die sets.
  • Service and set all loading automation.
  • Construct and service automation booms
  • Work from blueprints, drawings, layouts or other specifications to plan sequences of operationsfor fabricating tools or assemblies
  • Verify dimensions, alignments and clearances of finished parts for conformance to specifications,using measuring instruments such as calipers, gauge blocks, micrometers and dial indicators
  • Visualize and compute dimensions, sizes, shapes and tolerances of assemblies, based uponspecifications
  • Set up and operate conventional or computer numerically controlled machine tools such aslathes, milling machines and grinders to cut, bore, grind or otherwise shape parts to prescribeddimensions and finishes
  • File, grind, shim and adjust different parts to properly fit them together
  • Fit and assemble parts to make, repair or modify jigs, gauges and tools using machine tools andhand tools
  • Perform tests with completed tools to ensure that parts meet specifications; make adjustmentsas necessary
  • Lift, position and secure machine parts on surface plates or worktables, using hoists, vises, vblocks or angle plates
  • Measure, mark and scribe metal or plastic stock to lay out machining, using instruments such asprotractors, micrometers, scribes and rulers
  • Cut, shape and trim blanks or blocks to specified lengths or shapes, using power saws, powershears, rulers and hand tools
  • Design jigs, fixtures and templates for use as work aids in the fabrication of parts or products
  • Select materials to be used from a range of metals and alloys, based on properties such ashardness and heat tolerances
  • Set up and operate drill presses to drill and tap holes in parts for assembly
  • Perform incidental tasks as required to complete the larger task
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Knowledge of G-Suite preferred
