Job summary

Northwood Space is seeking a Tooling Engineer to design, build, commission, and improve tooling for production of ground systems. You will collaborate across mechanical, electrical, manufacturing, test, operations, and deployment teams to ensure tooling enables fast, reliable production and scalable deployment.

The role requires turning rough process needs into robust hardware, building prototypes, and ensuring documentation, training, and maintenance planning accompany each release.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in engineering or equivalent practical experience.
• 3+ years designing, building, or supporting tooling, fixtures, production equipment, or automation.

Responsibilities

• Own the design and delivery of production tooling from initial concept through deployment on the shop floor or in the field.
• Partner with engineers, technicians, and operators to understand processes and improve quality, speed, safety, and repeatability.
• Build quick prototypes and mature designs into robust, documented equipment.
• Bring up automated production equipment including sensors, actuators, PLC logic, HMIs, and safety features.
• Troubleshoot tooling and equipment issues in real time (mechanical, control logic, ergonomics).
• Create CAD models, drawings, BOMs, work instructions, commissioning plans, maintenance docs.
• Work with internal teams and vendors to fabricate, assemble, test, and improve tooling and production equipment.
• Drive continuous improvement to reduce cycle time and improve first-pass success.
• Establish practical tooling standards and best practices for scaled production.
