Job summary

Blue Origin is seeking an experienced mechanical design engineer to design tooling and fixtures for the New Glenn program. You will create CAD models and drawings, lead tooling projects from vendor selection through commissioning, and collaborate across flight, manufacturing, and integration teams to optimize safety, cost, quality, and delivery.

The role requires 10+ years in tooling design for manufacturing, strong DS&M skills, and familiarity with Creo/NX/Windchill, ANSYS, and ASME Y14.5.

Qualifications

• 10+ years' experience designing, building, and commissioning tooling and fixtures for manufacturing, assembly and test.
• BS in Engineering or equivalent experience.
• Proficient CAD design with manufacturing/assembly orientation; strong DFA/DFM and GD&T knowledge.
• Experience with FEM/structural analysis and hand calculations; familiar with ASME Y14.5.
• Knowledge of common manufacturing processes and materials; ability to manage projects end-to-end.

• Design tooling and equipment for production and integration of the New Glenn Launch Vehicle.
• Interpret drawings per ASME Y14.5 and produce CAD models and factory-ready drawings.
• Lead projects including vendor selection, fabrication, inspection, and commissioning of tooling.

• Set schedules and budgets, track progress, and ensure timely project completion.

This role is part of Blue Origin Operations, which is comprised of Integrated Supply Chain, Test Operations, Safety, Quality, and Mission Assurance. This includes Manufacturing and Supply Chain support across all Blue Origin facilities.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Design tooling and equipment for the production and integration of the New Glenn Launch Vehicle.
• Able to think outside of the box, capable of visualizing multiple design options, and use advanced manufacturing to efficiently provide tooling solutions.
• Capable of integrating concepts and principles of mechanical design and analysis of several projects in a fast-paced environment -- projects will vary in size and scale.
• Ability to interpret and apply sound design and drafting standards (ASME Y14.5) when creating drawings.
• Handle a wide range of technical design challenges related to all types of assembly fixtures, material handlers, rotisseries, test fixtures, structural weldments, environmental chambers, and custom machines.
• Work both independently and as part of a team. Committed to self improvement as well as supporting and developing your fellow engineers.
• Close collaboration with flight designers, manufacturing engineers, and integration engineering to achieve the best possible cradle-to-grave metrics (safety, cost, quality, cycle time, delivery, reliability, life, and maintenance/refurbishment)
• Manage projects, including vendor selection, fabrication, inspection, equipment installation, proof testing, and commissioning of custom tooling.
• Excellent communication skills, Set, implement, and maintain schedules and budgets to ensure project completion.
• Be committed to accountability, both individually and as part of a team.

Minimum Qualifications

• B.S. degree in Engineering, or equivalent work experience.
• 10+ years' experience with design, build, and commissioning of tooling, fixtures, custom machines or design support equipment for manufacturing, assembly, and test.
• Experience with FEM and complex structural analysis in addition to the ability to perform hand calculations including the creation of Freebody diagrams
• Proven experience with CAD based design software for modeling and drafting.
• Strong expertise in design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA) including experience taking products from development design to rate production
• Proven understanding of common manufacturing materials, GD&T, and tolerance/stack-up analysis
• Proven understanding of common manufacturing processes and machines such as CNC machining, manual mills and lathes, welding, sheet-metal bending, lifting/rigging, assembly, inspection, etc.
• Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Preferred Qualifications

• Familiarity with industry standards, such as ASME BTH-1, aluminum design manual, and AISC.
• Experience with custom machine design: motors, actuators, linear rails/actuators, pneumatics, hydraulics, bearings, etc.
• Experience with Creo and Windchill CAD/PDM systems
• Experience with NX and Teamcenter CAD/PDM systems
• Experience with Analysis packages such as: ANSYS Workbench, FEMAP Pre/Post processing, NASTRAN Solver, NX Advance Simulation, etc.
