The Tooling Design Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and optimizing foundry tooling (patterns, core boxes, and material handling devices) for ductile iron castings. This role oversees the entire tooling lifecycle—from design and gating development to casting process optimization—while ensuring safe, efficient, and cost-effective production.
Key Responsibilities
Tooling Design & Process Optimization
- Engineer 3D models and designs for patterns, core boxes, and material handling systems for horizontally and vertically parted molding machines.
- Run solidification and flow analysis simulations (Novacast/Magmasoft) to optimize gating, risering, yields, and casting quality.
- Partner with external vendors on sand core making simulations (airflow, compaction, venting).
Project & Vendor Management
- Manage tooling procurement, solicit and track vendor quotes (RFQ log), and approve final inspection reports.
- Lead design revisions, log Engineering Change Notices (ECNs), and distribute updates across teams.
- Schedule, track, and evaluate sample production runs to resolve process issues.
Cross-Functional Collaboration & Safety
- Partner with Operations, Quality, Pattern Shop, Maintenance, and external suppliers to resolve tooling and casting defects.
- Comply with site Safety Management Programs and promote daily workplace safety standard operating procedures.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Materials, or Metallurgical Engineering (or related technical field).
- Experience:
- 1+ years of engineering experience in a heavy manufacturing or foundry setting.
- 3+ years of experience in tooling design (cast/ductile iron and waterworks/fitting products preferred).
- Technical Skills: 3D CAD modeling, casting/gating design, and simulation software (e.g., Novacast, Magmasoft).
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
- Split between an office and a manufacturing plant environment (exposure to heat, cold, dust, and noise).
- Requires walking, standing, climbing, and lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Must wear standard personal protective equipment (PPE).
