Job summary

RBC Bearings Aircraft Products, Inc. is seeking a Tooling and Gaging Designer in Torrington, CT. You will design tooling and gaging systems, create CAD models and drawings, and support new product introduction as well as ongoing production.

You will collaborate with Manufacturing Engineering, Quality Assurance, Operations, and Product Engineering to deliver practical tooling solutions that improve quality, efficiency, and customer satisfaction.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering Technology, Quality Engineering Technology, or related technical discipline; or equivalent.
  • Minimum of three years of relevant manufacturing experience.
  • Experience in precision manufacturing operations preferred.
  • Bearing industry experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Design tooling, fixtures, and gaging to support manufacture and inspection of bearings and assemblies.
  • Create and maintain 3D CAD models and drawings for tooling.
  • Support introduction of new products with tooling and gaging solutions.
  • Develop technical solutions from engineering requirements and production input.
  • Maintain and improve existing tooling, fixture, and gage designs.
  • Develop and maintain gage documentation and SOPs.
  • Provide technical support by troubleshooting tooling and gaging issues.
  • Establish tooling design standards and best practices for new equipment and processes.
  • Review, verify, and approve engineering drawings; obtain approval when required.
  • Maintain ownership of tooling databases and related records.
  • Organize and manage tooling inventories.
  • Update departmental procedures and documentation as needed.
  • Collaborate with QA, Manufacturing Engineering, Product Engineering, Operations and stakeholders.
  • Support Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement.
  • Interpret customer specs, industry standards, and engineering docs.
  • Identify and communicate product drawing requirements for new/ modified manufacturing applications.
  • Communicate effectively through technical documentation and presentations.

Description

The Tooling and Gaging Designer at RBC Bearings Aircraft Products, Inc. located in Torrington, CT. is responsible for providing engineering design services that support the manufacture of precision bearings and related assemblies. This position designs, develops, and maintains tooling, fixtures, and gaging systems required for new product introduction and ongoing production. The role works closely with Manufacturing Engineering, Quality Assurance, Operations, and Product Engineering to develop practical solutions that support product quality, manufacturing efficiency, and customer requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop tooling, fixtures, and gaging required to support the manufacture and inspection of precision bearings and multi-component assemblies.
  • Create and maintain 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, and related documentation for tooling, fixtures, and gaging systems.
  • Support the introduction of new products by developing tooling and gaging solutions that meet manufacturing, quality, and customer requirements.
  • Develop technical solutions based on engineering requirements, manufacturing needs, sketches, specifications, and verbal instructions from engineering and production personnel.
  • Maintain and improve existing tooling, fixture, and gage designs supporting products currently in production and products requiring ongoing support.
  • Develop and maintain gage documentation, operating procedures, and related design records.
  • Provide technical support to manufacturing operations by troubleshooting tooling and gaging issues, identifying improvements, and recommending design solutions.
  • Establish and maintain tooling design standards and best practices for newly introduced manufacturing equipment and production processes.
  • Review, verify, and approve engineering drawings for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with established manufacturing and design standards. Obtain additional management approval when required.
  • Maintain ownership and administration of tooling databases and related records.
  • Organize and manage tooling inventories.
  • Update and maintain departmental procedures, standards, and documentation as needed.
  • Collaborate with Quality Assurance, Manufacturing Engineering, Product Engineering, Operations, and other stakeholders.
  • Support Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Interpret customer specifications, industry standards, and engineering documentation.
  • Identify and communicate product drawing requirements for new, modified, and special manufacturing applications.
  • Communicate effectively through technical documentation and verbal presentations.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering Technology, Quality Engineering Technology, or related technical discipline; or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of relevant manufacturing experience.
  • Experience supporting precision manufacturing operations preferred.
  • Bearing industry experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling and engineering drawing development, preferably using SolidWorks or similar software.
  • Experience with product data management (PDM) systems.
  • Knowledge of GD&T, drafting standards, and mechanical design practices.
  • Knowledge of precision measurement methods, inspection techniques, and gaging principles.
  • Understanding of SPC concepts and applications.
  • Knowledge of turning, grinding, bearing assembly, and gaging operations.
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001 and/or AS9100 requirements.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and standards.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Experience with tooling inventory management systems preferred; Gigatrack a plus.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, problem-solving, decision-making, verbal and written communication skills.
