Job summary

Legacy Industries is seeking a Tool Builder to fabricate, assemble, modify, and repair checking fixtures, jigs, and aerospace tooling used in aircraft parts manufacturing.

You will read blueprints and GD&T, set up mills, lathes, grinders, and drill presses, and document tooling to customer specifications with high precision.

This role demands meticulous workmanship, strict adherence to safety policies, and accurate labor hour tracking while supporting continuous tooling improvements.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED; apprenticeship in Tool & Die or Machining preferred.
• Minimum of 2 years in Tool Builder or related manufacturing; aerospace tooling preferred.
• Ability to read blueprints, GD&T, MBD models, and engineering specifications.
• Proficiency with precision measuring instruments: micrometers, calipers, indicators.
• Experience operating mills, lathes, grinders, and drill presses.
• Strong mechanical aptitude with attention to detail and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

• Maintain safe operations by following all safety policies and regulations.
• Interpret blueprints, MBD models, sketches, and engineering specifications to plan work.
• Set up and operate mills, lathes, grinders, drill presses to fabricate, modify, and repair tooling.
• Perform layout, assembly, and precision fitting of fixtures, jigs, and tooling.
• Use precision measuring instruments to verify dimensions and quality requirements.
• Perform rigging and material handling using forklifts, cranes, and other lifting equipment.
• Work with aluminum, steel, invar, and composites; perform finishing operations.
• Install components such as bushings and dowels; document tooling per requirements.
• May develop sketches or work instructions for fabrication or machining.
• Track labor hours accurately on all assigned jobs.
• Perform other duties as assigned by management.

The Tool Builder is responsible for the fabrication, assembly, modification, and repair of checking fixtures, jigs, and related aerospace tooling used in the manufacturing of aircraft parts and assemblies.

• Maintain safe operations by following all safety policies, procedures, and regulations.
• Interpret blueprints, MBD models, sketches, and engineering specifications to plan to execute work.
• Set up and operate machining equipment and shop tools (e.g., mills, lathes, grinders, drill presses) to fabricate, modify, and repair tooling.
• Perform layout, assembly, and precision fitting of checking fixtures, jigs, and related tooling.
• Use precision measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, indicators, lasers, etc.) to verify dimensions and quality requirements.
• Perform rigging and material handling using forklifts, cranes, and other lifting equipment as required.
• Work with a variety of materials including aluminum, steel, invar, and composites.
• Perform finishing operations including deburring, grinding, and surface preparation.
• Install components such as bushings, dowels, and other detailed tool features.
• Stamp, identify, and document tooling in accordance with company and customer requirements.
• May develop sketches or work instructions for fabrication or machining performed by others.
• Track labor hours accurately on all assigned jobs.
• Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful job performance will be considered. Typical qualifications would be:

• High school diploma or GED required; vocational training or apprenticeship in Tool & Die, Machining, or a related trade preferred.
• Minimum of 2 years of Tool Builder, Tool & Die, Machinist, or related manufacturing experience; aerospace tooling experience preferred.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, GD&T, MBD models, and engineering specifications.
• Proficiency with precision measuring instruments, including micrometers, calipers, indicators, and gauges.
• Experience operating manual machining equipment such as mills, lathes, grinders, and drill presses.
• Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to assemble, fit, troubleshoot, and verify precision tooling.
• Strong attention to detail, craftsmanship, and problem-solving skills.
