Job Summary

Responsible for conducting inspections for compliance with sections 907(a)(1)(A) and 911 of the Federal Control Act, educating retail tobacco proprietors regarding current federal tobacco control laws and regulations, and submitting quarterly reports and other documents as needed. All program participants/inspectors must pass a federal background/fingerprint clearance to receive federal commission credentials before they can perform any inspections. Must be willing to work with youth ages 16 - 20. This position is required to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends, drive a state vehicle, frequent travel which may include overnight stays to all 15 counties of Arizona to conduct inspections, attend meetings and or youth recruitment activities.

Job Duties
Responsibilities include:
  • Conducting inspections for compliance with sections 907(a)(1 )(A) and 911 of the Federal Control Act.
  • Assist with recruitment of underage purchasers, presentations at schools, youth groups, etc..., coordinating & scheduling inspections with youth & with team members.
  • Office duties, such as completing logs, documenting, handling & collecting evidence and preparing reports.
  • Other duties as assigned as related to the position.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)
Knowledge Of:
  • Public health principles, environmental health, regulatory inspection procedures, and tobacco control.
  • Knowledge may be acquired through education or on-the-job training and experience in a field such as public health, environmental health, or tobacco control.
  • Performance Management (PM), and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) and Lean methodologies.
Skilled In
  • Analytical and critical reading skills, analytical and critical writing skills, good communication skills, organizational and interpersonal skills, and planning and coordinating skills.
  • Skills may be acquired in a variety of on-the-job and academic experiences and professional certifications, such as a Registered Sanitarian.
Ability To
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate information both orally and in writing, and ability to exercise sound judgment in making decisions with regards to compliance and enforcement.

Selective Preference(s)
  • Bachelor's Degree in a science related to public or environmental health. Experience with regulatory investigations and compliance enforcement is preferred. Experience working with teenage youth.
Pre-Employment Requirements
  • Candidate will be required to have a valid Arizona Driver's License and undergo a criminal and driving background check.
  • The successful candidate must be a U.S. citizen and will be expected to become a commissioned officer of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Food and Drug Administration (FDA), under the authority of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.
  • Candidate will be working with minors and must clear an FDA background check to become a Commissioned Agent.

Retirement

To help you build a financially secure future, the State makes monthly contributions to finance your retirement benefit. The State will contribute to the ASRS in an amount equal to your contribution.
