Definition

The teacher assistant provides instructional support to kindergarten teachers in the daily management and instruction of students. An employee in this class is responsible for performing instructional and routine tasks to relieve teacher of routine activities and to help carry out daily classroom activities. All important aspects of the work are subject to detailed and specific procedures.

Supervision

The Kindergarten Teacher Assistant works under the direct supervision of the classroom teacher. Supervision is also provided by a building administrator.

Essential Functions of the Class (Performs a variety of duties delineated in one or more of the following sets)

  1. Performs designated learning tasks with students such as demonstrating or explaining lessons, prompting students, monitoring tests, and/or using supplementary materials; supervises other instructional tasks.
  2. Monitors student activities, observes and reports students’ learning; reads to students.
  3. Participates in professional development related to their roles and responsibilities including core subject area.
  4. Attends to children with certain disabilities (including LD, MR, ED, and PH)
  5. Operates office equipment such as computer/laptop, duplicator, photocopier, word processors and printers, projectors, and other audio-visual equipment.
  6. Maintains bulleting boards, student records of attendance, lunch tickets and health charts, and classroom supplies.
  7. Assists in performing therapeutic crisis intervention.
  8. Performs a wide variety of monitoring, record keeping, and file maintenance for an accelerated learning program.
  9. Escorts and assists students in physical and playground activities, to lunchroom, to resource classes, to the library, and to restrooms; escorts students on field trips.
  10. May work with individual or groups of students requiring close attention including small group reading and mathematics instruction; helps students with physical disabilities; and/or attends to students’ physical and sanitation needs.
  11. Monitors children on playground, or in room when teacher is not present (IEP conferences, parent conferences, etc.) and performs morning and afternoon bus duty monitoring.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Some knowledge of, or ability to quickly learn, the basics of child/adolescent growth and development and the goals and organization of public schools
  2. Ability to assist in the implementation of an instructional program and to participate in monitoring and insuring appropriate student behavior.
  3. Ability to use computer hardware and software in classes to which assigned.
  4. Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  5. Patience and ability to work with children and/or young adults.
  6. Ability to work harmoniously with and provide a broad range of support to instructional staff.
  7. Ability to learn new behavior and classroom management techniques and to perform all required tasks.
  8. Skill in oral and written communication.
  9. At times, and in some assignments, specialized knowledge of particular equipment or a specialized skill, such as ability to communicate with children with special disability (blind and nonverbal) may be a preferred or desirable ability.

Minimum Education, Training, and Experience Requirements

Successfully completion of at least 60 college credit hours from an accredited college/university or pass the ParaPro exam as prepared by the Department of Education and preferably including courses in office practices and some formal or informal experience working with children.

Salary: $19.59 to $27.38 Per Hour
