Job summary

MU Health Care is seeking a Throughput Coordinator RN in Emergency Services at University Hospital, Columbia, MO. You will lead patient flow, adjust staffing, and guide nursing staff to ensure patient safety and high-quality care.

The role requires Missouri RN licensure and at least 1 year of RN experience. This on-site position involves 3 nights per week (7pm–7:30am), with rotating holidays and weekend shifts in a busy ED environment.

Shift and Work Arrangement

Full Time Nights (7pm‑7:30am), 3 12‑hour shifts per week, with every other weekend and rotating holidays.

On‑site.

Department: Emergency Services (may float between ER, ER Observation, Pediatrics ER).

Facility: University Hospital – 1 Hospital Dr, Columbia, MO.

Compensation

• Base Pay Range: $34.46–$51.02 per hour, based on experience.
• Shift Differentials: +$4.00 per hour for night shift; +$3.00 per hour for weekend shift; +$3.00 per hour for core charge.
• Retention Rewards: Up to $15,000 (Option 1 – $2,000 per year for up to 5 years, totaling $10,000; Option 2 – Student Loan Repayment: $2,000 per year toward student loans, up to 5 years, totaling $10,000).
• Relocation Support: Additional $5,000 if moving from over 50 miles away.

MU Health Care is seeking a compassionate and dedicated individual to join our nursing team in Emergency Services as a Throughput Coordinator. The role involves leading patient flow, adjusting staffing levels, and guiding nursing staff to ensure patient safety and quality. The candidate should be a proactive problem‑solver and strong communicator.

Responsibilities

• Provides clinical patient care within the scope of a Registered Nurse, including assessment of condition, goal setting, and nursing actions to meet patients’ physical, psychological, social, and rehabilitative needs.
• Assesses, intervenes, and reassesses the patient’s self‑report and symptoms of pain promptly, using an appropriate tool for assessment and reassessment (0‑10 numerical scale, FACES, or the FLACC).
• Demonstrates an understanding of medications regarding their action and side effects, reports pertinent information, and educates patients and support persons about medications.
• Evaluates the effectiveness of nursing interventions in accomplishing goals and intended patient care outcomes.
• Maintains nursing care standards and implements policies and procedures of MU Health Care and the assigned nursing unit.
• Reports pertinent observations and reactions regarding patients to the appropriate person (i.e., resident physician, ancillary support teams) and records those observations accurately and concisely.
• Ensures smooth patient flow and efficient bed management within the unit.
• Coordinates admissions, transfers, and discharges of patients as needed.
• Responds to clinical emergencies or critical incidents within the unit.
• Communicates effectively with health‑care providers and other departments during emergencies.
• Facilitates effective communication between nursing staff, interdisciplinary team members, patients, and families.
• Collaborates with other health‑care professionals to coordinate patient care plans and achieve optimal patient outcomes.
• Provides clinical guidance and support to nursing staff, including performance feedback.
• Serves as a resource for nursing staff regarding clinical issues and patient care decisions.
• Addresses and resolves patient care concerns and complaints promptly, escalating to the clinical manager or Office of Patient Experience as appropriate.
• Conducts assigned audits of patient charts and documentation to ensure accuracy and compliance with regulatory standards.
• Participates in quality improvement initiatives and unit‑based quality improvement activities.
• Audits adherence to infection control protocols and patient safety guidelines.
• Participates in unit meetings, committees, and projects to contribute to unit goals and initiatives.
• Coordinates with nurses and providers in triage to assign incoming patients across available treatment spaces, considering nurse/provider ratios, readiness, and efficient use of all available treatment spaces and waiting areas.
• Coordinates with the Core Charge Nurse and Emergency Department to ensure staffing needs impacting patient flow are addressed and mitigated.
• Ensures visibility and support by rounding throughout all assigned pods.
• Monitors patient wait times and overall length of stay to identify barriers to throughput and care delivery, ensuring smooth patient flow and efficient bed management within the Emergency Department treatment areas.
• Oversees the admissions, transfers, and discharges of ED patients to minimize the time from decision to departure, supporting nursing staff in the discharge process and room turnaround, and collaborating with inpatient units to remove barriers to moving patients and ensure quality transitions of care.
• May complete unit/department‑specific duties as outlined in department documents.

Required Qualifications

• Missouri Board of Nursing RN or Nurse Licensure Compact multi‑state RN. When primary state of residency changes, compact state RNs must apply under new state of residency within thirty (30) days.
• One (1) year of RN experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Additional license/certification requirements as determined by the hiring department.

Physical Demands

The role also routinely comes into contact with patients who may have contagious illnesses. This position is in a health‑care facility open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with rotating shifts as well as holiday and work during inclement weather required.
