Thrift Store Manager provides supervision, oversight, and management of store operations to generate revenues which support agency administration and programs. The manager will oversee staff and volunteers, sales, donation of merchandise, promotion of the store in the community, and internal fiscal controls with efficiency, effectiveness, and courtesy. The position will ensure financial success and employee satisfaction by meeting measurable objectives.
Responsibilities of the Thrift Store Manager include management of warehouse/distribution functions and personnel, store set-up and retail operations. The overall goal is to financially support TSA programs by producing the highest possible revenue and margin while controlling operation costs. The manager must ensure warehouse operations and donation collections run efficiently within budget and that quality products quickly reach the sales floor. Key success factors include meeting or exceeding revenue budget targets; reducing expenses through improved processes; identifying and establishing new business/donation opportunities; and developing personnel succession plans to support evolving business needs.
Limited exposure to weather conditions while on pickups, deliveries, or disposal of refuse. Most work is performed in a heated and ventilated setting. Some brief exposure to extremely cold temperatures during winter months will be expected. Personal protective equipment will be worn as required in the site’s Hazard Communication Program.
Speaking, sitting, bending, walking, pushing, pulling, standing, kneeling, stooping, reaching, handling, fingering, climbing, and balancing. Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as boxes or furniture, reach overhead, and carry store supplies. Hearing and visual acuity must be within normal limits. Lifting and moving objects weighing up to 50 lbs. Ability to learn and adhere to proper lifting techniques, always wearing a back brace when lifting heavy items. Maintain the ability to operate a motor vehicle, computer, telephone, and similar technologies.
Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook familiarity preferred. Working knowledge of integrated database applications and ability to use new software programs with basic training.
Must be able to understand, follow, and give both written and oral instructions and be comfortable working with diverse individuals in face‑to‑face contact and over the telephone. Must use speech and hearing for ordinary and telephone conversation.
Must be able to perform simple calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) and apply concepts such as ratios and percentages in practical situations.
Must be punctual, organized, self‑motivated, flexible, and possess a desire to learn and assist those he/she interacts with.
Must complete the online course for this area and pass the Background Checks required by The Salvation Army for employment.
Must be a licensed driver with an acceptable driving history. Must also complete and pass The Salvation Army Driver Safety Course.
