Job summary

Normal Computing seeks researchers and engineers for its Thermodynamic Hardware Residency, a flagship program that blends physics, hardware, and machine learning. Residents join a small cohort, work under a research mentor, and have access to the team building cutting-edge thermodynamic hardware.

Two milestones anchor the residency: a co-authored research paper and a colloquium presentation; exceptional performers may convert to full-time roles after the residency.

Qualifications

  • Graduate degree required (MS or PhD) in physics, electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, applied math or related field.
  • Experience at hardware/ML intersection is strongly preferred.
  • Strong programming skills in Python; comfort with lower-level languages like C++ or Rust.

Responsibilities

  • Work hands-on with thermodynamic hardware: design, simulate, characterize, or evaluate hardware.
  • Design numerical methods for a new substrate exploiting thermal noise and analog dynamics.
  • Drive a research question from device physics to workloads mapped on thermodynamic compute.
  • Build evaluation frameworks and benchmarks for real hardware and simulations.
  • Co-author a research paper and present findings in a colloquium.
  • Experience startup pace with founders and researchers to ship impactful work.
  • Own a real technical problem at the boundary of physics, hardware, and ML.
