Position Summary

Counselors are primarily responsible for delivering individual, group, and family counseling services and completing documentation required for the clinical record, including the development of Individual Service Plans (ISP), psychosocial assessments, daily notes, and weekly reviews. Counselors attend interdisciplinary treatment team meetings, monitor treatment throughout client care, and establish parameters for discharge planning. They are responsible for crisis intervention and de‑escalation of situations to ensure safety for all, including assessment of crisis situations, determining severity, and making recommendations to direct care staff to ensure consistency and appropriate responses. Counselors may direct and supervise staff assigned to them and develop an approved curriculum for group and individual counseling.

Essential Job Functions
  • Utilize counseling and psychotherapy to evaluate and treat emotional and mental problems and conditions, whether cognitive, behavioral, or affective.
  • Assess need and make decisions regarding the delivery of the appropriate individual, group, and family counseling.
  • Conduct interviews and make assessments of potential clients to determine need and appropriateness for program participation and referrals.
  • Analyze situations and take necessary actions to provide crisis intervention, interpreting and implementing WestCare procedures regarding crisis intervention as appropriate.
  • Supervise and direct the activity of direct care staff.
  • Provide direct counseling services to clients.
  • Monitor and assess client behavior.
  • Create Individual Treatment/Service Plans.
  • Report to immediate supervisor any unusual incidents that should be brought to the attention of the Program Director, Regional Vice President, or regulatory agency.
  • Participate in decision to refer clients for ancillary services, i.e., family support groups, continuing care groups, etc.
  • Complete documentation required for clinical records and other reports as assigned.
  • Attend all interdisciplinary treatment team meetings and establish parameters for discharge planning.
  • Ensure that all staff are following WestCare policies and procedures.
  • Make recommendations to immediate supervisor regarding performance evaluations of program staff.
  • Make recommendations to immediate supervisor regarding interviewing and hiring of direct care staff.
  • Require regular and consistent attendance to ensure continuity of counseling services to clients.
  • Follow all WestCare policies and procedures.
  • Embrace and embody the mission, vision, guiding principles, clinical vision, and goals of WestCare Foundation.
  • All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Certifications/Licenses:
    • Current, active clinical license.
    • Holds a current QMHP level certification as a counselor for alcohol, drug, family, or related services from the National Association of Alcohol & Drug Abuse Counselors, the National Board of Certified Counselors, or a similar organization.
    • Ability to pass first level and NABS background clearance.
  • Vaccination Requirement: All employees of WestCare Foundation, Inc. and its affiliates must be fully vaccinated against COVID‑19 as of 11/1/2021. Employees with an approved Medical or Religious Exemption will be required to test for the virus weekly.
  • Education: Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in social work, psychology, childhood education, education counseling, and/or a similar field.
  • Experience and Competencies:
    • Maintain the highest ethical and professional standards toward clients and employees.
    • Avoid all dual relationships with clients (personal, financial, business, social, or sexual).
    • Meet all state and federal laws, regulations, and guidelines in the provision of client services.

Working Conditions

Indoor and outdoor settings; group and/or individual counseling sessions; direct contact with clients of all ages and levels of functioning; fast‑paced environment; potential for high noise level at times; minimum of 40 hours per week, with additional hours as needed; regular attendance required; ability to work hours beyond normal working times.

Essential Physical and Mental Demands of the Job

Ability to perform mobility and physical activity in office, residential, or outdoor environments, including standing, walking (even and uneven surfaces), sitting for extended periods, bending, twisting, reaching, balancing, occasional lifting and carrying of up to 30 pounds; use of computer and telephone systems for eye and hand coordination, typing, writing, and file management; ability to defend oneself and clients in physically abusive situations through approved physical de‑escalation techniques.

Require speaking: expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken word; delivering oral information, instructions, and detailed or important messages accurately, loudly, or quickly.

Require hearing: receiving and communicating detailed information through oral communication.

Require seeing: clarity of vision at 20 inches or less and at distance, necessary for paperwork and observing client behavior and activities at or outside the facility.

Exposure to human blood, body fluids, or tissues is not normal; potential exposure may occur depending on condition of employment; appropriate personal protective equipment will be available.
