Job summary

Valdosta-Lowndes County Parks and Recreation Authority seeks a part-time Therapeutic Program Assistant to help plan, coordinate and implement community-based leisure and recreational activities for individuals with developmental disabilities.

Under general supervision, you will assist with monthly social events, coordinate with guardians and staff, handle registrations and payments, recruit volunteers, and support Special Olympics events while promoting a positive, safe environment for

Qualifications

• High School Diploma, GED or current enrollment in high school.
• Applicant must be 16 years of age or older.
• Must possess a valid Georgia State Driver’s license and/or have reliable transportation to any assigned site in Lowndes County.
• Passionate and have experience/knowledge with special needs individuals.
• Knowledge of the sport is preferable.

Responsibilities

• Assist with planning and implementing monthly social events for individuals with developmental disabilities.
• Develop and promote positive working relationships with guardians/parents and group home staff.
• Receipts payments for program fees.
• Assist with planning Local Special Olympic events and coordinate with vendors.
• Recruit and train volunteers.
• Coach athletes in various sports and supervise weekend trips for safety.
• Assist athletes with financial transactions and medications.
• Work as camp counselor in summer camp for individuals with developmental disabilities.
• Prepare and/or process newsletters, registration forms, membership forms, event evaluations, flyers and emails.
• Assist with vehicle and facility maintenance and operate various vehicles and equipment.

Under general supervision of the Therapeutic Supervisor, assists with the planning, coordinating and implementation of community-based leisure, social and recreational programs for individuals with developmental disabilities. Reports to the Therapeutic Supervisor.

JOB FUNCTIONS

• Assists with planning and implementing monthly social events for individuals with developmental disabilities.
• Develops and promotes positive working relationships with guardians/ parents of participants and group home staff.
• Receipts payments for program fees.
• Assists with planning and implementing Local Special Olympic events & corresponds with vendors to ensure quality events.
• Recruits and trains volunteers.
• Coaches athletes in a variety of sports; oversees athletes on weekend trips to ensure safety
• Assists athletes with financial transactions and medications.
• Works as camp counselor in summer camp for individuals with developmental disabilities.
• Prepares and/or processes a variety of documentation such as newsletters, registration forms, membership forms, event evaluations, flyers and email.
• Assists with vehicle and facility maintenance.
• Operates a variety of vehicles, equipment and machinery including a 15 passenger van, automobile, sound system, copy machine, kitchen equipment, computer, etc.
• Provides a positive, supporting atmosphere during all Therapeutic Programs; Encourages participant involvement in recreation opportunities.

Qualifications:

• High School Diploma, GED or current enrollment in high school
• Applicant must be 16 years of age or older

• A successful applicant will be passionate and have an experience and knowledge with special needs individuals
• Knowledge of the sport is preferable
