Job summary

Elk Hill Farm, Inc. in Charlottesville, VA, is seeking a part-time Therapeutic Mentor to provide positive role modeling, coaching, and supervision for youth in care.

You will work with families and placing agencies to develop skills, supervise recreational activities, maintain session notes, and participate in meetings as requested. CPR/First Aid certification and a valid driver's license are required.

  • Maintain valid driver's license and good driving record.
  • CPR and First Aid certification preferred or maintained.

PRIMARYFUNCTION:

Serve as a positive role model for youth, providing support, coaching, training, and supervision within a healthy, positive relationship.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work with youth to develop interpersonal, communication, social, and problem- solving skills, as well as age-appropriate behaviors and constructive use of leisure time
  • Provide and supervise recreational and social activities based on the goals established collaboratively with the youth, parents, and placing agency
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of youth, flexibility, a non-threatening manner, respect for youth’s autonomy, confidentiality, socio-cultural values, personal goals, lifestyle choices, and family interactions, and appropriate professional boundaries and ethics
  • Provide the number of hours per month/week contracted by the placing agency
  • Complete session progress notes for each session and provide to supervisor, as required
  • Attend FAPT, treatment team, or family engagement meetings as requested by supervisor
  • Maintain current certification in CPR and First Aid
  • Maintain a driving record that meets the requirements of Elk Hill
  • Maintain liability coverage, at the level required by Elk Hill, on personal auto insurance policy
  • Participate in face-to-face supervision with supervisor at least once per month
  • Work cooperatively with all Elk Hill staff to improve the quality of the whole organization
  • Other duties as assigned

CORE COMPETENCIES AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Ability to work independently and without direct supervision
  • Experience working with children and/or adolescents
  • Willingness to travel and work non-traditional business hours
  • Ability to provide timely, accurate and thorough, well written documentation of services as required
  • Exhibit consistent personal integrity in dealings with youth, families, co-workers, and agency personnel
  • The temperament to work with, and care for, children and families with special needs
  • Must demonstrate sensitivity to Elk Hill’s service population’s cultural and socioeconomic characteristics

CREDENTIALS AND/OR EDUCATION

  • High-School Diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Maintain valid driver's license and good driving record.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to traverse inside and outside of the property and other job sites including uneven terrain
  • Periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Ability to engage with mentor in a variety of activities, both physical and non-physical in nature, in both indoor and outdoor environments, and in a variety of weather conditions
  • Frequently lift up to 5 pounds, periodically lift up 25 pounds depending on the activity engaged in

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Frequent transportation of a client as needed or required
  • Frequent travel to other locations as needed or required
