Job summary

The Bellevue Youth Theatre in Bellevue, WA is seeking a Theater Technician to join as a part-time, all‑around technician. You will help manage lighting, sound, and scenic elements, mentor volunteers, and support productions and community events.

The role reports to the Production Manager and offers flexible hours during peak seasons. Ideal candidates bring basic programming on lighting and sound boards, safe work practices, and a willingness to learn new skills.

Qualifications

Job Summary

The Theater Technician will work as an all‑around theater technician. The role requires a willingness to learn new skills and to adjust previously owned skills. It is a part‑time position averaging 8‑15 hours a week, with possible extensions during high production timelines and summer. The Technician is expected to be a leader, mentor to volunteers and participants, and a role model within the community. All Theatrical Technicians report directly to the Production Manager, Moises Hinojos.

This position will handle approximately 10 productions a year in addition to camps, averaging 8‑15 hours per week, with the option for more during the busiest production seasons.

The Bellevue Youth Theatre is dedicated to providing theater arts opportunities for all young people, regardless of income or ability, and offers technical support for various events around the City of Bellevue.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Assist with tracking lighting, sound, and scenic elements throughout the production, and report progress to Production Manager and Artistic Director.
• Assist Production Manager with the scenic load‑in/out for shows.
• Assist Production Manager/Technical director with light hang and light focus for shows.
• Basic programming on a standard Element Lightboard.
• Basic programming on a Yamaha SLQ5 Soundboard.
• Assist with the maintenance and upkeep of theater equipment.
• Assist with outside city events such as Movies In The Park, Bellevue Family 4th of July Celebration, and other city events.
• Assist as technician or House Manager for rentals.
• Attend all staff meetings.
• Assist with all staff events and fundraisers as needed.
• Supervise and train volunteers in scenic, lighting, or sound.
• Utilize proper safety practices and procedures.
• Maintain a variety of files and records; enter and retrieve information from a computer.
• Work weekends and nights as needed.
• Assist with day camps, as needed.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge Of

• Theatrical production protocols.
• Electrics and lighting with regards to safety, hanging, focusing, and programming.

• Producing licensed productions.

Ability To

• Work with limited budgets and resources to create theatrical props designs.
• Communicate with a variety of theatre personnel in a timely and professional manner.
• Oversee volunteers, including many with various skills and abilities.

Education and Experience Guidelines

• Some coursework (or equivalent study) in theatre, technical theatre, electrics/carpentry, scenic painting, graphic design, or a combination thereof.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Some theatrical design experience preferred.
• At least 2 years working in community or professional theatre.

Other Requirements

• Must pass a criminal background check.

Physical Demands and Working Environment

• Environment: Office, theatre, and stage environment; exposure to noise, dust.
• Physical: Sufficient physical ability to work in a theatre setting. Walk, stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; moderate or light lifting and carrying; bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling. May be required to push, pull, lift, and/or carry up to 50 pounds.
• Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents and to operate equipment.
• Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to high.

Definition of a Variable Employee

• Average weekly hours cannot be determined at date of hire.
• Hours may vary from week to week and are anticipated to be 8–20 hours per week with an increase during performance weeks.

Conditions of Employment

• Some positions may require completion of a criminal background check prior to start employment.
