Job summary

Theatre West in Iowa City is seeking a dedicated Theater Costumer to join the performing arts team and oversee student costume crews as well as hair and makeup for two annual productions. This part-time, seasonal role focuses on design, sourcing, and production-quality costuming with mentoring of students.

The ideal candidate has experience in costume design and construction, strong organizational skills, and a passion for mentoring students in theatrical production.

Qualifications

• Experience in costume design, sewing, and alterations (theatrical experience preferred).
• Ability to lead and instruct students with varying levels of experience.
• Strong organizational and time management skills.
• Creativity, flexibility, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively with students, staff, and parent volunteers.

Responsibilities

• Design, source, and create costumes for two annual productions (one in fall, one in spring).
• Organize and maintain the costume shop, inventory, and supplies.
• Collaborate with the director and production team to align costume designs with the show’s vision.
• Supervise and mentor student costume crew, teaching basic sewing and costume care skills.
• Oversee hair and makeup crews, ensuring styling aligns with the production’s needs.
• Conduct costume fittings and alterations as needed.
• Manage costume budget and maintain detailed expense records.
• Ensure all costumes are properly cleaned, stored, and/or returned after each production.

This position is responsible for costuming the cast for two annual productions and overseeing the student costume crew, as well as the hair and makeup crews.
