Role Summary

ON.energyis building the backbone of energy and AI infrastructure powering grid-safe data centers and mission-critical facilities. The company supplies and operates hyperscale power systems that solve the toughest resilience challenges, delivering custom solutions for AI data centers, mission-critical facilities, and front-of-the-meter assets. Our Research & Development team is looking for a hands-on Test Engineer to join our Houston team. This is a versatile, growth-oriented role for an engineer who wants to build a broad foundation across testing, design, and field work.

You will support our Test Engineering team in designing, integrating, and executing tests for state of the art power conversion systems, energy storage systems, and control architectures in high-stakes, advanced applications as part of ON.energy's Research and Development group. You will also contribute to electrical design deliverables and participate in the assembly, integration, troubleshooting, and testing of equipment in a laboratory environment.

The ideal candidate is curious and adaptable—comfortable moving between a lab bench, a CAD tool, and physical equipment on the same day. You should be eager to learn new tools and technologies, including simulation and programming platforms such as MATLAB/Simulink, PLC programming, and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) systems, while being comfortable working directly with electrical and test equipment up to 2000Vdc and 1000Vac.

We value drive, curiosity, and a willingness to take on new challenges as much as years of experience. This role is an opportunity to develop a broad engineering skill set while working on advanced power conversion and energy storage technologies.

Laboratory Validation
  • Support the development and execution of test procedures for high-power power electronic converters and energy storage systems.
  • Operate laboratory equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, power analyzers, power supplies, generators, and load banks to perform functional, performance, and stress testing.
  • Identify and reproduce edge-case failures in controlled laboratory environments and analyze test data to support hardware and software improvements.
  • Execute functional and performance tests against product requirements, documenting results in accordance with applicable safety standards and laboratory procedures.
Documentation
  • Prepare and maintain single-line diagrams (SLDs), electrical calculations, technical reports, and bills of materials (BOMs).
  • Support component selection for batteries, BMS, inverters, protection devices, and related electrical components.
  • Translate laboratory findings and test procedures into field-ready commissioning and technical documentation, lessons learned, application notes, and reports.
  • Interact with component vendors to properly apply their products and resolve non-conformance issues identified in the lab.
Hands-On Field Work
  • Participate in, and oversee technician support to, install, connect, configure, and reconfigure laboratory and field equipment.
  • Provide hands-on technical support during equipment integration, laboratory testing, troubleshooting, and commissioning activities.
  • Support field testing and commissioning activities as required, including troubleshooting equipment and validating system performance.
Learning and Growth
  • Develop proficiency in engineering tools and platforms such as MATLAB/Simulink, PLC programming, and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) systems.
  • Build knowledge of power electronics, BESS controls, Grid-Following (GFL), and Grid-Forming (GFM) applications through hands-on testing and project work.
  • Progress toward greater ownership of test design, electrical design deliverables, troubleshooting, and technical validation.
Required Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electro-Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 1 to 2 years of experience in design, integration and testing of electrical installations. Strong entry-level candidates with internship or academic project experience and a demonstrated willingness to learn will be considered.
  • Foundational knowledge of power electronics (inverters/rectifiers) and an interest in the bulk power systems, BESS, and other grid-enhancing technologies.
  • Ability to read electrical diagrams and prepare technical documentation.
  • Familiarity with relevant standards (UL, NEC, IEEE, and similar).
  • Willingness to perform hands-on physical work in a laboratory environment.
  • Able to work 100% on-site in Houston, Texas.
Preferred Experience
  • Experience operating laboratory test equipment, including oscilloscopes, multimeters, power analyzers/meters, load banks, power supplies, and generators.
  • Exposure to MATLAB/Simulink or other engineering simulation tools.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD or similar electrical drafting/design software.
  • Basic knowledge of Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing and simulation.
  • Basic understanding of SCADA systems and industrial communication protocols such as Modbus TCP/IP.
  • Basic scripting or programming experience using Python, MATLAB, or similar languages for test automation, data acquisition, or data analysis.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot technical issues methodically.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills, with a willingness to learn and work across multiple engineering disciplines.
