Job Title: Test Engineer
Reports to: Manager, Engineering Department: Engineering
Work Model: Full-time, On-site – 20%+ Travel Required
Schedule: Monday – Friday 8am-5pm
Job Summary
This position is responsible for coordinating and performing qualification testing on commercial and military grade rugged electronics. Environmental, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), power, and safety qualification are used to support product development and validation, marketing, sales, and manufacturing initiatives to prove design acceptability and obtain various compliance certifications.
Essential Functions
- Basic understanding of compliance test standards; conducting and witnessing tests; performing diagnostic procedures; measuring performance; analyzing and evaluating findings; performing forensic analysis of failures; troubleshooting failures; supervising sub‑contractors.
- Attain compliance by isolating and resolving non‑compliance issues; recommending product and process changes; initiating engineering change notices.
- Complete compliance reports by collecting and summarizing measurement data and trends.
- Assist in developing test strategies with the Systems team and in creating test plans.
- Coordinate with external laboratories to develop test procedures, obtain quotations, and schedule testing.
- Provide testing input during design and development phases; assist engineers and designers through product characterization and testing.
- Inspect products and testing processes for flaws, identify areas of improvement, and provide oversight for internal and external testing.
- Build, set up, and operate testing equipment; conduct experiments, collect data, calculate results, and record findings.
- Coordinate witnesses for observed testing.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Basic knowledge of mechanical or electrical systems.
- Familiarity with design and build of wire harnesses and cables, and routing of cables in computer-based systems.
- Basic knowledge of computer hardware and systems integration.
- Basic knowledge of compliance and testing industry standards and engineering theory.
- Awareness of current and past industry standards for military, automotive, or industrial environments.
- Proficiency with instrumentation (oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, network analyzers).
- Experience operating large stationary machinery (Thermotron, vibration tables, EMC antenna arrays).
- Ability to multitask and meet simultaneous project milestones.
- Capability to build, troubleshoot, and debug computer‑based systems (network switches, firewalls, rack‑mounted monitors, UPS).
- Proficiency with engineering software (Altium Designer, AutoDesk Inventor, AutoCAD, LTSPICE).
- Skill in reading and comparing technical data sheets.
Required Qualifications
- US Person (US Citizen, Green Card holder, or protected person).
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, or related field, or at least 10 years of Mechanical Engineering experience in lieu of a degree.
- Current valid US driver’s license with a good driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
- 3+ years of electrical or mechanical component building experience.
- 3+ years of CAD software experience.
- Extensive knowledge of computer equipment (PC, firewall, switch, data acquisition systems, UPS, server rack equipment).
- Extensive knowledge of advanced testing equipment (Bode plot generators, oscilloscopes, signal generators, spectrum analyzers, Hall‑effect probes).
Work Conditions
Work is primarily performed in an office environment. Occasional exposure to manufacturing floor and testing environments. May require lifting up to 25lbs, standing for extended periods during product testing.
