Job summary

The University of Portland invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Exercise Science to begin August 15, 2027. The program is newly developed within the College of Arts and Sciences and aims to offer hands-on learning and undergraduate research opportunities.

Successful candidates will teach foundational courses, contribute to curriculum growth, and collaborate with departments across campus to recruit students and build partnerships.

Qualifications

• Terminal degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) in exercise science, kinesiology, or related discipline.
• Teaching or instructional experience.
• Experience teaching undergraduate courses in exercise science, fitness assessment, exercise prescription, exercise for special populations, research methods in exercise science, kinesiology, functional human anatomy and physiology, and related disciplines.
• Experience mentoring and supervising undergraduate student research projects.
• Preferred: Certification in exercise, sport, or health from a recognized professional organization (e.g., ACSM, NSCA) or willingness to obtain certification.

Responsibilities

• Teach in-person core courses in the exercise science program such as fitness assessment, exercise prescription, and related subjects.
• Collaborate with Biology department to offer anatomy and physiology courses.
• Develop and grow the program through recruitment, curriculum development, and partnerships.
• Engage in research/mentoring that involves undergraduates in a primarily undergraduate setting.

Education

Terminal degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) in exercise science, kinesiology, or related discipline

Teaching or instructional experience

Experience teaching undergraduate courses in exercise science, fitness assessment, exercise prescription, and related areas

Experience mentoring undergraduate student research projects

Certification in exercise, sport, or health from a recognized professional organization or willingness to obtain
