Job summary

The Prospect Park YMCA, part of the YMCA of Greater New York, is hiring a Tennis Sports Instructor to work with children and teens, delivering progressive tennis lessons and fostering safe, inclusive participation in sport.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience teaching children/teens sports in a structured setting.
  • Current First Aid or CPR certifications.
  • Knowledge of youth development stages.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with members of all ages.
  • Must attend the YMCA Coaching 101 Training within 90 days of employment.
  • Must receive the CDC HEADS UP Concussion in Youth Sports certificate within 30 days of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Teach progressive tennis lessons and promote enjoyment of sports for children and teens.
  • Create age-appropriate, progressive lesson plans and ensure safety and proper equipment use.
  • Supervise participants and adhere to YMCA program standards and guidelines.
  • Communicate progress to parents/guardians and discuss next session enrollment.
  • Work with supervisor to develop program objectives and lead promotion/recruitment efforts.
  • Provide direction to volunteers or assistants as needed.
  • Maintain a clean, safe program space and follow emergency procedures.

The Prospect Park YMCA is seeking a Tennis Sports Instructor who will be responsible for working with children/teens to promote the enjoyment of sports activities while improving physical competence, developing confidence, and teaching basic skill development. The overall major functions of the Sports Instructor also include:* Provide a fun, safe, and positive experience for all participants.* Demonstrate strong service and hospitality with all constituents, including, but not limited to, program participants and parents/guardians.* Create an all-inclusive and supportive learning environment.* Teach progressive lessons and provide opportunities to demonstrate learned skills.* Encourage a lifetime participation in sports and physical activity.* Embody the YMCA Core Values.**Key Responsibilities:*** Work with the Supervisor to develop program objectives and goals for each session.* Create a written lesson plan for the program session that is age-appropriate and progressive, as needed.* Provide supervision of the participants in line with YMCA program standards and guidelines (e.g., ratio, attendance, etc.).* Be able to modify lesson plans and instructions to meet the needs of the participants.* Emphasize teamwork and sportsmanship.* Teach rules and fundamentals and enhance basic skills.* Communicate with parents/guardians regarding the progress of their child/teen and registration for the next session.* Communicate with parents/guardians about additional YMCA opportunities that can benefit them or their child/teen.* Ensure that all equipment is age-appropriate, safe, and in proper working condition. This includes conducting monthly equipment safety checks.* Work with the Supervisor to develop and lead program promotion and recruitment efforts.* When applicable, provide direction to volunteers or Sports Assistants who support the program.* Have a thorough understanding of branch emergency procedures and take appropriate actions in emergencies.* Ensure the cleanliness of the program space during all activities.* Inform the Manager on Duty (MOD) regarding any incident reports that need to be filled out.* Actively participate in designated meetings, training sessions, and special events.**Desired Skills & Experience:*** High School Diploma or equivalent.* Minimum of one (1) year of experience teaching children/teens sports in a structured setting.* Knowledge of youth development stages.* Content expert in designated sports activity.* Ability to communicate effectively with members of all ages.* Current First Aid or CPR certifications.* Must attend the YMCA Coaching 101 Training within ninety (90) days of employment.* Must receive the CDC HEADS UP Concussion in Youth Sports certificate within thirty (30) days of employment.**Benefits:** The YMCA of Greater New York offers a variety of benefits to its staff members, including retirement benefits, medical benefits, paid time off, free YMCA membership, and more!
