Job summary

Iowa Department of Transportation seeks a Temporary Winter Maintenance Worker to join the winter crew, clearing roads and handling icy conditions to keep travelers safe. Seasonal work runs Oct 9, 2026 to Apr 22, 2027, with flexible on-call schedules to fit garage needs across roughly 100 locations.

Starting wages are $22.50 for new seasonal workers and $24.00 for returning seasonal workers, with overtime possible when weather requires.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Safety-focused and detail-oriented.
• Must possess a Class A or B CDL (with air brakes) before hire.
• Must obtain Class A or B CDL with air brakes within 45 days of hire.
• Consent to a full query in the Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse; pass pre-employment drug test.

This temporary position runs from October 9, 2026 – April 22, 2027.

Schedule and Pay:

During winter operations, the Iowa DOT works around the clock and you’ll be on call to provide support! Schedules and hours are flexible, and we do our best to work around your availability.

Starting wages are outlined below, with opportunity for overtime pay as the weather or garage needs:

• New Seasonal Workers - $22.50
• Returning Seasonal Workers - $24.00
  • Returning = worked any seasonal positions since Oct. 1, 2020

This is a non-merit temporary position with the Iowa Department of Transportation.
