Job summary

Counsel for Justice (CFJ) is seeking a Temporary Staff Attorney – Housing in Los Angeles to provide eviction defense and housing law services. The role supports CFJ’s Housing Project, including clinics at major courthouses, with supervision of volunteers and real-time document review.

The position may be full-time or part-time (~20 hours/week), with a hybrid remote/in-person arrangement. Salary range targets experienced attorneys; California Bar admission required.

Qualifications

• J.D. and active California State Bar membership in good standing.
• At least one year of experience in eviction and housing law.
• Experience providing self-help legal services, especially in a court-based setting, preferred.
• Experience supervising, training, or supporting pro-bono attorneys preferred.
• Strong legal writing and communication skills.
• Ability to manage competing priorities in a collaborative team environment.
• Spanish language skills preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate CFJ’s unlawful detainer answer clinic for self-represented tenants, including real-time supervision and review of work completed by pro bono volunteers.
• Provide legal information and procedural guidance to tenants facing eviction and review court forms and other case-related documents.
• Support the continued development and implementation of housing-related self-help clinic services, including services related to discovery, as needed.
• Develop and maintain templates, training materials, and clinic workflows that help tenants understand court procedures and prepare required filings.
• For a full-time attorney, handle a limited number of eviction defense matters, depending on program needs and caseload capacity.
• Maintain timely and accurate client and case information in CFJ’s case-management system.
• Assist with the training and support of pro bono volunteers.
• Perform other related duties as assigned, consistent with the role.

About Counsel for Justice

Counsel for Justice (CFJ) is a nonprofit legal services organization providing free civil legal assistance to LA County residents with a focus on survivors of domestic violence, immigrants, veterans, and tenants facing eviction. CFJ delivers legal services through a mix of staff-run programs and volunteer attorney clinics, working closely with community partners and the court. Position Overview

CFJ is seeking a Temporary Staff Attorney – Housing to provide legal services to tenants facing eviction in Los Angeles County. This is a temporary, exempt position anticipated to continue through at least December 31, 2026. The position may be structured as full-time, or part-time at approximately 20 hours per week. CFJ is willing to discuss other schedules based on candidate availability and program needs. The position reports to the Supervising Attorney – Housing and works closely with the Housing Paralegal, Director of Pro Bono, and Director of Self-Help Services. The Attorney will support CFJ’s Housing Project, including its eviction legal services clinics at the Stanley Mosk and Norwalk Courthouses. The attorney will coordinate clinic operations and provide real-time supervision and document review for remote pro bono volunteers assisting self-represented tenants with unlawful detainer matters. For a part-time attorney, the primary focus will be supporting the clinics. A full‑time attorney may also handle a limited number of eviction defense matters and provide additional support to the broader Housing Project.

Position Details, Compensation, & Benefits

• This is a temporary, exempt position, anticipated to continue through at least December 31, 2026. The position may be structured as full‑time or part‑time at approximately 20 hours per week. CFJ is willing to discuss other schedules based on candidate availability and program needs.
• The annualized salary range for a full‑time schedule is $80,000–$89,000, commensurate with experience. An employee working a part‑time schedule will receive a prorated salary based on the agreed‑upon schedule.
• This is a hybrid role with remote work and in‑person clinic coverage at the Stanley Mosk and Norwalk Courthouses, as needed.
