Job summary

NC State University in Clayton, NC is seeking a field crops and animal research assistant to help establish, maintain and disposition crops and specimens. You will assist with treatments, plots, data collection and harvesting under established protocols.

The role requires lifting up to 50 lbs, operating farm equipment, reading pesticide labels, and clear written and verbal communication. Schedule is Monday–Friday, 7am–4pm, on-site in Clayton.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of agricultural practices related to crop and livestock production.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. on a routine basis.
  • Ability to operate farm equipment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to read and follow pesticide labels.
  • Ability to collect and record data.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with establishment, maintenance and disposition of field crops, vegetables, fruit, tobacco, and animal specimens.
  • Assist with pesticide applications, fertilizer use, and irrigation according to protocol.
  • Operate equipment to prepare fields, apply treatments and harvest crops.
  • Assist with plot layout, treatments, and data collection.
  • Hand planting and harvest.
  • Assist in seed lab and swine facility.
  • Work with irrigation equipment including drip systems.
  • Maintain equipment, grounds, buildings and field plots.

Job description

Essential Job Duties

This position will assist with all tasks related to the establishment, maintenance, and disposition of the field crops, vegetables, fruit, tobacco, and animal specimens.

This includes, but is not limited to:

  • The application of treatments to research subjects according to protocol including pesticides, fertilizers and irrigation
  • Operation of a wide variety of agriculture equipment to prepare fields, apply treatments and harvest crops.
  • Assisting research personnel with plot layout, implementation of treatments, and collection and recording of data.
  • Hand planting and harvest
  • Assisting research personnel in the seed lab and swine facility.
  • Working with various types of irrigation equipment including laying solid set pipe and drip irrigation.
  • Maintenance of equipment, grounds, buildings, field plots and other tasks.
Work Schedule

Monday-Friday, 7am-4pm

Compensation

Anticipated Hiring Range: $20/hr
