Job summary

West Valley City is seeking a temporary Parks Maintenance Worker to maintain city parks and related properties, ensuring clean, safe recreational facilities for residents. The role involves a range of grounds tasks and occasional cross-department support.

Starting pay is $21.00 per hour with a 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, 6:30am to 3pm. This temporary position includes training and growth opportunities, with on-site work in various park locations.

Qualifications

  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing.
  • Must be able to perform basic arithmetic and geometric calculations.
  • Valid Utah driver's license or ability to obtain one.

Responsibilities

  • Install and maintain irrigation systems in parks and municipal buildings.
  • Mow, weed, spray, fertilize turf areas; perform litter pickup.
  • Maintain playgrounds, facilities, and power equipment; assist as needed.

Summary

Maintain City Parks and related properties. Provide citizens with clean, safe and well cared recreational facilities. Perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks on grounds, equipment, facilities, parks and other assigned areas. Employee may also assist in other Departments as assigned by supervisor.


Starting Pay: $21.00


FLSA Status: Non-Exempt


Schedule: Temporary, 40 hours per week M-F, 6:30am to 3pm, rotating on call

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.


Primary Responsibilities


  • Irrigation system construction and maintenance in parks, trails, streetscapes and municipal buildings.

  • Including sprinkler repair, lateral and main line repair, controller programming, system turn-on, shut-downs and blow outs.


Secondary Responsibilities


  • Perform mowing, weeding, spraying and fertilizing of turf areas.

  • Perform litter pick-up as needed.

  • Perform impact material maintenance in playgrounds.

  • Perform weeding, mulching, and planting of flower and shrub beds.

  • Perform tree trimming and general care.

  • Perform maintenance duties on physical facilities such as pavilions, restrooms, score towers, fences, fountains, picnic tables, benches, and playgrounds.

  • Perform maintenance duties on power equipment, trailers, trucks, shops, storage areas, and any other equipment used in the operation and maintenance of parks.

  • Lift, carry, travel and climb ladders.

  • Enter and exit underground vaults.

  • Perform snow removal duties, including clearing of walks with shovels and/or snow blowers, applying salt and/or icemelter, and clearing of city owned parking lots with snowplows.

  • Operate machinery, mowers, trucks, etc.

  • Use a variety of hand tools, including shovels, rakes, wrenches, etc.

  • Must be able to push and pull 50 pounds and lift 50 pounds to shoulder height repeatedly.

  • Maintain general housekeeping in park maintenance area, including: sweeping, cleaning floors, emptying garbage, etc.

  • Assist full-time staff as needed.

  • Other duties as assigned by a supervisor.

  • Must be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide, also should be able to perform some geometric calculations.

  • Valid Utah driver's license or ability to obtain one.

  • This position is frequently subject to extreme weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow and wind.

  • Frequent exposure to dust, fumes and dirty conditions as is typical of a shop and park environment.

  • Employee will be subject to moderate noise levels and exposure to moderate physical hazards in performing projects and in maintenance work.

  • Also, exposure to intermittent stress due to human behavior and job tasks may be experienced.

  • Employee will need to be on his/her feet and walking for extended periods.
