New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) seeks a highly motivated Immigration Attorney for the LGBTQ Law Unit on a full-time, temporary basis. The role focuses on removal defense for LGBTQ+ immigrants, including asylum, bond hearings, and appeals, with a commitment to client-centered, trauma-informed representation.

The LGBTQ Law Unit provides free legal services across a wide range of civil matters and engages community partners to advance LGBTQ rights and protections in New York.

Qualifications

• J.D. degree and admission to a State bar; NY bar preferred.
• Fluency in a second language (Spanish) is strongly preferred.
• Ability to communicate effectively with diverse clients and stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Represent LGBTQ+ immigrants in defensive asylum claims before courts and agencies.
• Prepare and file forms, affidavits, and legal memoranda for USCIS/EOIR/BIA and federal courts.
• Represent immigrant clients in ancillary matters before civil and administrative hearings.
• Conduct legal screenings, track client cases, and follow up for funding purposes.
• Contribute to outreach and education efforts and collaborate with the Unit Director.
