Job summary

The Walker Art Center in Minneapolis is seeking a temporary Support Technician to assist with the fabrication and installation of a large-scale art piece. The role involves outdoor work, manual handling, and operation of hand and power tools, with daily collaboration across Exhibition Installation, Registration and Visual Art teams.

Compensation is $25.00 per hour for a full-time 35-hour week, with OT eligibility and a scheduled window from October 5, 2026 to November 4, 2026.

Qualifications

  • 1 year or more of museum/gallery experience.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, floor plans, and instructions.

Job description

The Walker Art Center empowers people to experience the transformative possibilities of the art and ideas of our time and to imagine the world in new ways. In our over 125-year history, we have become one of the most celebrated art museums in the country and we are known for our innovative presentations and acclaimed collections of contemporary art across the spectrum of the visual, performing, and media arts.

This position is a project-based, serving as support crew for the fabrication of a large-scale art installation that is part of an exhibition opening at the Walker Art Center in the fall of 2026. The Support Technician receives assignments from the project’s Lead Preparator and works alongside the Exhibition Installation, Registration and Visual Art departments to achieve daily objectives.

Primary responsibilities for this role revolve around the conveyance, mixing, loading and unloading of earthen/organic materials associated with the installation. Individuals in this role must be physically capable of being outdoors, working with their hands, and being on their feet for long periods of time. They must also demonstrate competence with a range of hand and power tools as well as comfort with the use of landscaping tools such as shovels and wheelbarrows.

WHAT WE NEED IN YOU
  • 1 year or more of museum/gallery experience, exemplifying professional practices in art handling & installation.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
  • Experience using hand tools, power tools, moving equipment, and mechanical lifts.
  • Basic carpentry, fabrication, or related technical skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, floor plans, and written instructions.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work.
  • Effective verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated commitment to workplace safety and safe handling of artwork and equipment.
Working Conditions / Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds without assistance.
  • Ability to safely perform work while standing, walking, bending, kneeling, reaching, and carrying materials for extended periods.
  • Ability to work comfortably and safely at heights using ladders and mechanized lift equipment.
  • Regular use of hand tools, power tools, carts, dollies, forklifts, and other moving equipment as appropriate.
  • Work is performed in galleries, studios, storage areas, loading docks, and other museum environments, with occasional exposure to varying temperatures and outdoor conditions during loading and unloading activities.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS

This position is considered full-time (35 hours per week), non-exempt. As a non-exempt position, it is eligible for overtime pay. The compensation for this role is $25.00 hourly.

This role is temporary, anticipated to start October 5, 2026 and end November 4, 2026

BENEFITS

This position is eligible to accrue sick time at 1 hour for every 30 hours worked

This position is not eligible for relocation assistance.
