Job summary

The State of Nebraska is hiring winter temporary Highway Maintenance Workers for Lincoln and surrounding areas. Positions are temporary through March 31, 2027, with potential for longer-term opportunities. The role supports winter operations, snow removal, and emergency response while maintaining safety along Nebraska roadways.

Starting pay is $20.390 per hour, with CDL holders starting at $21.953. Out-of-town travel may be required; strict attendance and readiness for on-call shifts are

• Must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid driver’s license.
• Senior: must hold a Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License with air brakes and tanker endorsements within 60 days of employment.
• Preferred: valid Class A or B CDL and experience operating heavy equipment.
• Other: may require out-of-town, overnight travel; regular attendance; able to report to work within 40 minutes.

Hiring Locations: Auburn, Beatrice, David City, Dorchester, Fairbury, Falls City, Greenwood, Lincoln, Nebraska City, Palmyra, Pawnee City, Seward, Tecumseh, and Wahoo. Winter positions, temporary, until March 31, 2027. Hours may depend on the weather, maybe more or less than 40 hours per week.

• Spread and tamp surfacing materials.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements / Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Highway Maintenance Worker: Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license.

Highway Maintenance Worker/ Senior: Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license, and possession of a Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License with air brakes and tanker endorsements is required within 60 days of employment.

Preferred Qualifications: A valid Class A or B Commercial driver's license. Experience in the operation of heavy equipment.

Other: May require out-of-town, overnight travel. Regular and reliable attendance is also required. Must be able to be reached to report to work outside scheduled work hours for highway emergencies within 40 minutes.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities: Must be able to safely move, drag, lift 35 pounds frequently, up to 60 pounds occasionally (without assistance), and 90 or more pounds infrequently (with assistance); climb, bend or stoop; work in outdoor temperature extremes and work around high-speed traffic.
