Job summary

Cabarrus County Schools Mt. Pleasant High in Mount Pleasant, NC is seeking a Temporary Custodian to perform custodial and light groundskeeping duties in assigned school facilities. The role requires the ability to perform heavy cleaning tasks, operate cleaning equipment, and maintain safe, clean environments for students and staff.

Starting date is immediate. A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred, and possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license is required.

Responsibilities

• Sweep sidewalks and walkways; police grounds and remove debris, handle snow and de-icing as needed.
• Sweep, mop, vacuum, strip, wax and buff floor surfaces.
• Clean bathrooms and fixtures; restock supplies and disinfect as needed.
• Empty trash; recycle materials properly.
• Dust furniture, walls, window sills and woodwork; clean windows and fixtures.
• Open/close buildings, adjust lights and HVAC as appropriate.
• Move and arrange furniture and organize storage rooms.
• Unload and store supplies and deliveries.
• Perform minor maintenance on appliances as abilities allow.

Job Description

General Definition of Work

Under general supervision, performs a variety of general custodial and light groundskeeping work in the care and maintenance of assigned school buildings and facilities. Work involves sweeping, mopping and using vacuum cleaners to clean floors; washing walls, woodwork and fixtures; and policing buildings to empty trash receptacles and pick up debris, etc. Work involves the transferring of equipment, custodial, instrument repair and audiovisual. Reports to the Assistant Principal or Principal.

Qualification Requirements

• General knowledge of the standard methods, materials, and equipment employed in janitorial work.
• Some knowledge of cleaning procedures and the use of cleaning materials.
• Ability to follow instructions.
• Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in completing work assignments.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
• Has proven attendance record.
• High school diploma or equivalency preferred.

Essential Functions

• Sweeps sidewalks and walkways outside of buildings; polices grounds, picking up debris; shovels snow and/or applies de-icing compounds to walkways and driveways, as necessary.
• Sweeps, mops, vacuums, strips, waxes and buffs floor surfaces.
• Scrubs and cleans bathrooms, including toilets, mirrors, wash basins, urinals, commodes, slop sinks, etc. Fills tissue, towels, soap and other dispensers, disinfects as needed.
• Empties trash receptacles; deposits recyclable material in proper receptacles.
• To dust furniture, walls, window sills, blinds and other woodwork.
• Cleans windows, walls, woodwork, blinds and light fixtures.
• Clean drinking fountains.
• To assemble, set up and move furniture as required.
• May open and secure buildings at start and end of workday, respectively; may turn on and off lights at start and end of day, respectively, and adjust heating or air conditioning, as appropriate.
• To clean and organize storage room.
• Unload and store supplies and deliveries.
• Raises and lowers flags at start and end of workday.
• Performs minor maintenance on appliances, as abilities allow.
• Performs related work as required.

Physical Requirements

• Must be physically able to operate vacuum cleaners, carpet shampooers, brooms, mops, leaf blowers, etc.
• Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to push, pull, and carry or otherwise move objects.
• Requires climbing, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping and repetitive motion. May require working on ladders.
• Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using janitorial equipment. Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as janitorial equipment.
• Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
• Requires the ability to talk and hear: (Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words. Hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear.)
• Physical demand requirements are for medium work.

Special Requirements

Must possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
