Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Review and inspect work by student technicians before bikes are released to customers, especially for higher-risk repairs.
• Support staff in implementing shop safety and risk management protocols.

Job Summary

Campus Recreation is seeking a skilled bike mechanic with formal training and hands-on shop experience to provide advanced maintenance, repair, and technical support within the bike repair shop. This is a hands-on, part-time temporary role focused on safe, high-quality service for the Georgia Tech Recreation community. The Certified Lead Bike Mechanic will work alongside full-time Campus Recreation staff and student bike technicians, serving as the primary technical resource while supporting the day-to-day operation of the shop.

Responsibilities

• Perform advanced bicycle maintenance, diagnostics, adjustments, and repairs, including work on a range of bicycles, e-bikes, and scooters as appropriate to¿shop capabilities.
• Serve as a technical resource for student bike technicians and Campus Recreation staff on repair methods, component compatibility, fitting, and bike safety.
• Review and inspect work completed by student bike technicians before bikes are released to customers, particularly when work involves higher-risk or advanced repairs.
• Support full-time Campus Recreation staff in implementing shop risk management protocols that promote the safety of staff and patrons
• Provide hands-on instruction, coaching, and technical training to student bike technicians; provide feedback on repair quality and safe work practices.
• Assist¿with inventory tracking, parts identification, tool management, shop supplies, repair records, and point-of-sale processes.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe bike shop environment and identify equipment,tools,supplies, or facility needs for full-time staff.
• Assist¿with¿maintaining technical procedures, repair standards, and shop documentation used by student technicians.
• Provide educational workshops or demonstrations for the campus community on bicycle repair, routine maintenance, bike safety, and related topics.
• Perform other duties related to bike shop operations as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Formal training from a recognized bike mechanic training program (e.g., UBI, Barnett Bicycle Institute, or comparable program), or equivalent demonstrated professional training.
• Two or more years of hands-on experience working in a bicycle shop or similar repair environment.
• Strong knowledge of bicycle repair, fitting, component compatibility, diagnostic procedures, and safety standards.
• Ability to independently diagnose and complete complex repairs with limited day-to-day technical supervision.
• Ability to effectively teach, coach, and provide technical guidance to student employees with varying levels of mechanical experience.
• Excellent communication and customer service skills, particularly when explaining technical issues to students and non-mechanics.
• Ability to lift and maneuver bicycles, parts, tools, and related equipment as needed, with reasonable accommodations as applicable.
• Ability to stand and perform hands-on mechanical work for extended periods, with reasonable accommodations as applicable.
• Familiarity with point-of-sale systems, inventory management, and basic shop recordkeeping.
