Job summary

Portland Community College (PCC) seeks an instructional support professional for welding labs at the Swan Island Training Center, Vigor Shipyard. The role is 0.8 FTE with part-time hours, supporting students, setting up labs, and ensuring safety and proper equipment use.

You will lead lab procedures, assist instructors, manage inventories, procure supplies, and coordinate with vendors while maintaining safety and compliance standards.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent plus two years of post-secondary education in a technical discipline.
• Three years of experience in the technical area; substitutions allowed year-for-year.
• Proven written and oral communication skills to assist students.
• Proven ability to lead others and evaluate performance.
• The ability to lift 50 lbs in this work environment.
• Depending on laboratory assignment, specialized knowledge or program-specific certifications may be required.

Responsibilities

• Provide instructional support to students using welding equipment, tools, materials, and lab resources.
• Set up and support laboratory activities, monitor student progress, and assist with instruction and assessments.
• Train and orient students and staff on laboratory procedures, equipment operation, safety protocols, and PPE usage.

Under the technical direction of one or more members of the facultyor an instructional administrator, prepares the weld shop orclassrooms following specified instructions. Assists with thedesign, construction and/or fabrication of equipment, modules, andexperiments that will be used in the laboratories or classrooms toassist the instructor in the delivery of desired instructionaloutcomes. Work is performed relatively independently subject tosupervisory review and direction. Incumbents may provide workdirection to work-study, student helpers and casual employees andcoordinate their activities.

What You’ll Do and Who We AreLooking For

Instruction & Instructional Support

• Provide instructional support to students through the safe useof welding equipment, tools, materials, and laboratoryresources.
• Set up and support laboratory activities, monitor studentprogress, and assist with instruction and assessments asassigned.
• Train and orient students and staff on laboratory procedures,equipment operation, safety protocols, and the use of personalprotective equipment PPE).

Administrative Duties

• Maintain laboratory records, inventories, and operationalprocedures.
• Procure supplies, equipment, and instructional materials; trackexpenditures and coordinate with vendors.

Maintenance & Equipment Management

• Maintain welding laboratories, equipment, and facilities toensure safe, clean, and effective operations.
• Troubleshoot equipment issues, coordinate repairs, and managethe checkout and tracking of tools and materials.
• Handle hazardous materials and maintain required safetydocumentation in compliance with applicable regulations andmaintain Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).

Personnel & Leadership

• Coordinate daily laboratory operations and oversee classified,temporary, and student employees.
• Schedule, train, and support staff in laboratory preparation,equipment maintenance, and safety.

Minimum Qualifications: To be considered, your application mustdemonstrate these minimum qualifications. (Experience is calculatedbased on the start and end dates you provide multiplied by thenumber of hours per week worked).

• High school diploma or equivalent and two years ofpost-secondary education in a specific technical disciplineappropriate to the instructional support.
• Three years of experience in the technical area are required;relevant experience may substitute for the post-secondary educationrequirement on a year-for-year basis.

• Demonstrates the ability to provide general assistance tostudents, faculty and staff to ensure orientation to safetyprotocols and proper use of the laboratory and personal protectiveequipment.
• Demonstrates the ability to support activities in the weldshop; establishes procedures for the use of equipment, inventory,supplies, materials, and machinery.
• Demonstrate the ability to diagnose, troubleshoot and repair awide variety of industrial equipment
• Experience creating purchase orders, making purchase onpurchase card, tracking expenditures, and ensuring budgetcompliance
• Demonstrates a willingness and ability to work collaborativelywith faculty, staff, students and vendors to best meet the needs ofthe fast paced, high stress, physically demanding, hazardousenvironment with a wide-range of learners.
• Demonstrates computer competency skills, including but notlimited to email, and Google Suite.

How We Determine Initial Salary Placement

Initial Salary Placement will be between Step 1 ($27.85 perhour) through Step 2 ($28.68 per hour) based on related experience,per PCC's collective bargaining agreement. Placement at a higherstep may be possible based upon additional experience and internalequity.
