Job summary

Michigan Library Association is seeking a Teen & Community Services Librarian to lead teen programs, outreach, and community partnerships. The role reports to the Library Director and is based in a full-time, exempt capacity within the Administration department.

The library serves a rural community and plans a new teen center to expand outreach. Responsibilities include planning teen programs, outreach with schools, and developing the teen collection, while supporting cross-age initiatives and

Qualifications

  • MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited program (recent graduates encouraged to apply).
  • Experience with teen programming, outreach, or services is a plus.
  • Comfort with public speaking and group facilitation.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and lead engaging programs for teens (ages 13-17).
  • Build relationships with local schools, organizations, and partners.
  • Provide outreach services beyond library walls at local events.
  • Help develop and maintain a teen collection.
  • Create welcoming spaces for teens to feel comfortable and respected.
  • Contribute to planning and development of the new teen center.
  • Assist with library-wide programming and initiatives for all ages.

In a Nutshell:

Do you love connecting with teens, building community partnerships, and creating programs people actually want to attend? We’re looking for an energetic, creative, and community-minded librarian to lead teen services while helping expand outreach across our vibrant, engaged community.

We serve a rural community of about 18,000 people who LOVE their library. Our programs are busy, our partnerships are strong, and our staff genuinely enjoys working together.

We also have received a grant to develop a designated teen center. This is your chance to help build a meaningful community service that will have a lasting impact on the community.

What You’ll Do
  • Plan and lead engaging programs for teens (ages 13-17)
  • Build strong relationships with local schools, organizations, and community partners
  • Provide outreach services beyond the library walls at local school and community events
  • Help develop and maintain a relevant, appealing teen collection
  • Create welcoming spaces where teens feel comfortable and respected
  • Provide creative input in the planning and development of the new teen center
  • Assist with library-wide programming and initiatives for all ages
Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the librarian should be able to:

  • Speak clearly and hear people of all ages, including small children
  • Move, bend, and stay active during programs
  • Lift up to 25 lbs. (books, program supplies, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications
  • MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited program (recent graduates encouraged to apply)

  • Creativity, flexibility, and a willingness to try new ideas
  • Strong written and verbal communication and collaboration skills
  • Ability to work some evenings and occasional Saturdays
  • Experience with programming, outreach, or teen services is a plus
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines
  • Comfort with public speaking and group facilitation
  • Proficiency with common office and digital tools
  • Familiarity with social media platforms

Work Schedule
