Job description

Career Area: Strategy Job Description: Your Work Shapes the World at Caterpillar Inc.

When you join Caterpillar, you're joining a global team who cares not just about the work we do – but also about each other. We are the makers, problem solvers, and future world builders who are creating stronger, more sustainable communities. We don't just talk about progress and innovation here – we make it happen, with our customers, where we work and live. Together, we are building a better world, so we can all enjoy living in it. The Technology Strategy Senior Manager leads the development of enterprise strategies at the intersection of technology, business, and growth with particular focus on artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, sensing technologies, and application development. This role helps Caterpillar determine where technology can create differentiated customer value, strengthen the company's competitive position, enable new products and services, and improve the performance of its businesses. The Senior Manager evaluates emerging technologies, evolving industry structures, ecosystem dynamics, and potential disruptions. Working across Caterpillar's businesses and technology organizations, the role converts complex technical developments into clear enterprise choices, investment priorities, and actionable strategic roadmaps.

What You Will Do:
  • Lead enterprise technology strategy engagements addressing opportunities and disruptions with potential to materially affect Caterpillar's businesses and customers.
  • Develop enterprise-level strategic perspectives and roadmaps for AI, robotics, sensing technologies, and application development.
  • Translate emerging technology developments into clear business implications, strategic choices, and executive-level recommendations.
  • Assess technologies, platforms, use cases, business models, market maturity, adoption barriers, ecosystem structures, and potential sources of competitive advantage.
  • Develop strategic roadmaps that connect customer needs and enterprise growth priorities with technology capabilities, investments, partnerships, and delivery pathways.
  • Evaluate build, buy, partner, and invest options based on strategic fit, economic value, speed, capability requirements, and long‑term differentiation.
  • Identify opportunities for technology-enabled products, services, customer experiences, and new business models.
  • Partner with Caterpillar business units, Digital, Information Technology, engineering, advanced research, corporate development, and other enterprise functions.
  • Develop business cases and investment theses that quantify market potential, customer value, financial impact, capability requirements, and execution risk.
  • Lead external market research, technology scouting, expert interviews, competitor assessments, and ecosystem analysis.
  • Establish fact‑based perspectives on technology trends, separating durable strategic shifts from short‑term market activity.
  • Present recommendations to senior leadership and facilitate alignment around critical technology choices and investment priorities.
  • Develop early‑warning perspectives on technologies or non‑traditional competitors that could disrupt Caterpillar's products, channels, customer relationships, or sources of competitive advantage.
  • Lead and develop multidisciplinary teams that combine strategy, commercial, technical, financial, and operational expertise.
  • Build reusable technology strategy methodologies, external networks, and knowledge assets for the Enterprise Strategy team.
What You Have:
  • Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Business, Finance, Economics, or a related discipline; typically 10 or more years of progressive experience in technology strategy, corporate strategy, management consulting, product strategy, digital transformation, engineering leadership, venture investing, or a related field.
  • Priority Technology Domains: Strong working knowledge of AI, robotics, sensing technologies, and application development, including the ability to assess relevant use cases, ecosystems, business models, and strategic implications.
  • Technology and Business Acumen: Ability to understand complex technologies and evaluate their potential commercial, operational, and competitive implications.
  • Strategy Development: Extensive experience structuring ambiguous questions, evaluating strategic alternatives, and creating actionable roadmaps.
  • Financial and Commercial Analysis: Ability to evaluate markets, business models, investments, partnerships, and technology‑enabled growth opportunities.
  • Leadership: Demonstrated ability to lead cross‑functional teams that include business, engineering, digital, financial, and operational stakeholders.
  • Stakeholder Management: Proven ability to engage senior leaders, reconcile differing technical and commercial perspectives, and build alignment around enterprise choices.
  • Decision Making and Critical Thinking: Ability to assess emerging areas where available information may be incomplete, uncertain, or rapidly evolving.
  • Effective Communication: Exceptional ability to explain complex technology topics in clear business language and communicate recommendations to executive audiences.
What Will Set You Apart:
  • MBA, master's degree, or doctorate in a relevant business or technical discipline.
  • Experience at a recognized strategy consulting firm, technology company, industrial corporation, venture capital firm, or corporate strategy organization.
  • Experience developing strategies involving industrial technology, autonomy, robotics, artificial intelligence, connected assets, advanced analytics, digital platforms, energy systems, or software‑enabled services.
  • Experience assessing technology partnerships, acquisitions, venture investments, or new‑business opportunities.
  • Strong understanding of industrial customers, workflows, channels, and asset‑intensive operating environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to connect technology investments to customer value, business economics, and sustainable competitive advantage.
  • Strong external network across technology companies, research organizations, investors, industry experts, and potential ecosystem partners.
