Job summary

Carolina-Biological in Burlington, NC is seeking a Technologist to prepare and produce teaching materials in Biology, Genetics and related fields. The role focuses on culturing, kit assembly, quality checks and timely fulfillment of customer orders.

You will operate in a live biology environment, maintain cultures and inventory, propagate plants, and collaborate with managers, customer service and buyers to ensure product availability and safe handling.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in a biological science preferred.
• 6 to 12 months experience working in a biology related field preferred.
• Will consider equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

• Fulfills customer orders with high quality specimens and equipment used in the teaching and study of Biology, Genetics and related fields.
• Develops and maintains cultures of living organisms. Monitors water quality, feeding regimens, temperature and light cycles.
• Reads and deciphers bulk lists and pick-tickets accurately.
• Plans daily work/production according to seasonal demand.
• Collects living organisms from local fields, woods, ponds, and streams as instructed by supervisor.
• Maintains inventory of all stock items and packages components into saleable kits.
• Interacts with manager, customer service and buyers to obtain prices, costs, product availability and product information.
• Communicates with manager regarding culture health/viability, product issues, and safety issues.
• Assists manager with onboarding, training and cross training within the department.
• Assists with propagating, planting, pollinating, and harvesting greenhouse plants, corn, tobacco, tomatoes, soybeans and others.
• Maintains an organized, clean and safe work environment.
• Handles hazardous material as necessary following manufacturer recommendations.
• Participates in on-call medicinal leech service 2-3 weeks per year.

OBJECTIVE / PURPOSE

The Technologist will perform a variety of duties to prepare and produce materials used in the teaching and study of Biology, Genetics and related fields. These duties may include; but are not limited to: culturing and/or maintaining organisms, assembling components into kits, performing quality checks, maintaining production levels and fulfilling customer orders.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND FUNCTIONS

• Fulfills customer orders with high quality specimens and equipment used in the teaching and study of Biology, Genetics and related fields.
• Develops and maintains cultures of living organisms. Promotes general health, growth and normal reproduction of organisms being cultured by monitoring water quality, feeding regimens, temperature and light cycles.
• Reads and deciphers bulk lists and pick-tickets accurately.
• Plans daily work/production according to seasonal demand.
• Collects living organisms from local fields, woods, ponds, and streams as instructed by supervisor.
• Monitors and maintains adequate inventory of all stock items and packages individual components into saleable kits.
• Interacts with manager, customer service and buyers to obtain or relay information concerning prices, costs, product availability and product information.
• Effectively communicates with manager regarding culture health/viability, product issues, organism health, maintenance issues, purchasing needs, collectable material needs and safety issues.
• Assists manager with onboarding, training and cross training within the department.
• Assists manager in maintaining appropriate inventory levels, planning production and monitoring products for quality to facilitate timely fulfillment of customer orders and limit back-orders.
• Assists with propagating, planting, pollinating, and harvesting greenhouse plants, corn, tobacco, tomatoes, soybeans and others.
• Assists in periodic physical inventories.
• Maintains an organized, clean and safe work environment.
• Handles hazardous material as necessary following manufacturer recommendations and standard procedures as determined by the EHS department.
• Assists manager with developing, implementing and maintaining protocols.
• Participates 2-3 weeks per year in on-call medicinal leech service.
• Performs evening and/or weekend duties to maintain and ensure the health and viability of cultures and organisms as necessary.
• The Live Biology Group has seasonal variation in labor needs. As a result, employees are expected to help in other areas as needed. Live Biology is a living materials, laboratory, and manufacturing facility. Employees may be asked to help in areas with living materials, with outside field or collecting work, and in various laboratory work areas.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Education: High School Diploma or GED required. Associate’s, or Bachelor’s degree in a biological science preferred.
