Job summary

IU Health in Avon, Indiana seeks a compassionate unit secretary who can perform direct patient care and essential clerical duties. The role supports the patient care team, maintains a clean patient environment, and helps patients, families and staff with information and directions.

You may schedule tests, maintain records, and manage equipment deliveries. The ideal candidate holds a high school diploma or GED, with acute care experience or successful completion of the IU Health PCA education

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• CPR certification may be required.
• Previous acute patient care experience or completion of IU Health PCA education program required.
• Current Basic Life Support certification (AHA) or via IU Health PCA program.
• Knowledge of medical terminology.
• Knowledge of infection control principles.
• Basic computer skills.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct patient care and unit clerical duties under the supervision of a Clinical Nurse.
• Support the patient care team and ensure a clean, orderly environment.
• Provide information and directions to physicians, patients, families, customers and vendors.
• Schedule tests and procedures and maintain patient records as needed.
• May sign patients in and out of the unit and handle equipment/storage tasks.
• Assist with ordering, receiving and delivering equipment and supplies for the team.
• May provide continuous observation including suicide prevention.

Job description

Provides a combination of direct patient care and unit clerical duties for the department. Administers care to designated patients under the direction of a Clinical Nurse and provides support to the patient care team. Ensures a clean and orderly environment for the patient. Provides information, directions and other assistance to physicians, patients, families, customers and vendors. May schedule tests and procedures for the patient, maintain patient records and sign patients in and out of the unit. May be responsible for the ordering, receiving and delivering of equipment and supplies for the patient care team. May be required to provide continuous observation including suicide prevention.

• High School Diploma or GED is required. CPR May be required to complete Unit Secretary training program.
• Requires previous comparable acute patient care experience or successful completion of the IU Health PCA education program.
• Requires current Basic Life Support certification through the AHA or attainment at the completion of the IU Health PCA education program. Other advanced life support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
• Requires basic knowledge of medical terminology.
• Requires knowledge of procedures and standards related to patient care activities.
• Requires knowledge of principles of infection control.
