Job summary

IU Health is seeking a Patient Care Assistant (PCA) for Med Surg 2. You will work with nurses to deliver compassionate care to adult surgical and medical patients, including mobility, hygiene, and daily living activities.

On a fast-paced inpatient unit, you will obtain vital signs, perform phlebotomy, and support safety and infection prevention. This role offers full-time or part-time 12-hour shifts, with weekend and holiday rotation as required.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• CPR certification through quarterly RQI training.
• Previous comparable acute patient care experience is required.
• Advanced life support certifications may be required per unit.
• Basic knowledge of medical terminology.
• Knowledge of infection control principles.
• Basic computer skills are required.

Responsibilities

• Partner with nurses to deliver patient care.
• Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as mobility, bathing, grooming, and toileting.
• Obtain and report vital signs and other patient observations.
• Perform phlebotomy and other approved patient care tasks.
• Support patient safety initiatives and infection prevention practices.
• Document patient care activities accurately and timely.
• Collaborate with RNs, LPNs, Charge Nurses, and Unit Secretaries to ensure patient outcomes.
• Monitor patient responses to interventions and communicate concerns.

About Med Surg 2

Med Surg 2 is a fast-paced medical-surgical inpatient unit specializing in the care of adult patients who are preparing for or recovering from surgical procedures. Our patient population primarily includes orthopedic, urology, OB/GYN, and general surgery patients, while also caring for medical patients with infections, wounds, dementia, mental health crises, and chronic health conditions.

Our mission is to provide safe, high-quality care that supports patients in achieving a smooth recovery and returning to their baseline level of health.

Position Responsibilities

As a PCA, you will:

• Partner with nurses and other healthcare team members to deliver exceptional patient care.
• Assist patients with activities of daily living, including mobility, bathing, grooming, and toileting.
• Obtain and report vital signs and other patient observations.
• Perform phlebotomy and other approved patient care tasks.
• Support patient safety initiatives and infection prevention practices.
• Document patient care activities accurately and timely.
• Collaborate with RNs, LPNs, Charge Nurses, and Unit Secretaries to ensure excellent patient outcomes.
• Monitor patient responses to interventions and communicate concerns to the healthcare team.

Schedule & Work Expectations

Shift Options

• Day Shift: 6:00 AM - 6:30 PM
• Night Shift: 6:00 PM - 6:30 AM

Employment Status

• Full-Time: Three (3) 12-hour shifts per week
• Part-Time: Two (2) 12-hour shifts per week

Additional Requirements

• Every third weekend rotation
• Holiday rotation
• Self-scheduling, with schedule preferences considered while balancing overall unit staffing needs
• Consistent availability required; reduced hours or PRN scheduling accommodations are not available at this time

Qualifications

Required

• High School Diploma or GED is required.
• CPR is required through quarterly RQI training.

• Other advanced life support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
