Job summary

U.S. Xpress is seeking a Technician, III Trailer at the SHIPPENSBURG USX TERMINAL to diagnose, repair, and service trailers and related systems. The role requires strong diagnostic skills and the ability to mentor junior technicians.

The position runs Monday through Friday with a daytime to evening shift, on-site with comprehensive benefits and a focus on safety, efficiency, and quality workmanship.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience working on trailers.
  • A Technical Diploma in Diesel Technology may substitute for 1 year of experience.
  • DOT and Brake certifications required.
  • Meritor/Bendix and tandem assembly certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Tests, services, and repairs trailers and related mechanical components.
  • Perform in-depth diagnostics and repairs to brakes, suspension, air system, lighting system and body panels.
  • Mentor Trailer Tech I and II when needed.
  • Accurately complete DOT forms and other documentation in a timely fashion.
  • Diagnose complex mechanical, refrigerant, and electrical problems in Reefer systems and related components.
  • Identify and obtain replacement parts to complete repairs.
  • Maintain tools, work area, and safety standards in the shop.

What You’ll Do:

Tests, services, and repairs trailers and related mechanical components.

  • Perform in-depth diagnostics and repairs to brakes, suspension, air system, lighting system, suspension and all body panels etc.
  • Act as mentor and assist Trailer Tech I and II when needed.
  • Accurately complete DOT forms and all other forms of documentation in timely fashion.
  • May require diagnosing complex mechanical, refrigerant, and electrical problems related to all Reefer systems (single & multi-temp), including engine, cooling, heating and on board computer modules.
  • May require repairs and diagnostics on starting and charging system, complex cooling and re-charge, and electrical including common fault codes. Repairs include performing leak detection procedures, compressor replacements, rebuilding throttling valves, soldering refrigerant lines, evaporator/condenser replacements and front main engine seal replacements.
  • Identify and obtain necessary replacement parts as needed to execute repairs.
  • Pull trailers in and out of shop using yard jockey before and after repairs.
  • Accurately complete DOT forms and all other forms of documentation in timely fashion.
  • Perform basic or minor repairs and inspections on brakes, tires, wiring etc.
  • Perform basic and routine preventative maintenance on tractors and trailers
  • Check vehicle fluids (transmission, oil, windshield wiper, antifreeze, etc.).
  • Perform vehicle preventative maintenance (PM’s) as outlined in USX PM guideline’s
  • Change vehicle tires.
  • Grease mechanical parts.
  • Clean and maintain work area on a daily basis.
  • Maintain a high productivity level and complete jobs within or better than SRT times.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.
What We’re Looking For:
Education

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience of working on trailers required.

A Technical Diploma from an accredited Diesel Technology Program may substitute for 1 year of the required experience.

Skills/Certifications
  • Meritor/Bendix and tandem assembly certification preferred.
  • DOT and Brake Certifications required.
  • Advanced welding skills required.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Basic computer skills preferred.
  • Ability to read and write.
  • Must be consistently capable of independently analyzing and safely resolving mechanical problems.
  • Must provide own hand tools adequate to perform job functions.
Work Environment / Physical Requirements –Repair Shop Settings.

  • Ability to constantly go in/out of truck on 51” and one 24” step pulling full body weight.
  • Ability to frequently go up and down ramp.
  • Ability to occasionally push 250 lbs, pull 125 lbs, frequently push/pull 100/50 lbs and constantly push/pull 50/25 lbs.
  • Ability to occasionally carry, lift overhead, high, low and medium lift 51/75 lbs, frequently 50/21 lbs and constantly 20/1 lbs.
