Job summary

U.S. Xpress, Inc. in New Caney, TX is seeking a skilled diesel technician to diagnose, repair, and maintain tractors and trailers.

You will perform in-depth diagnostics on engines, transmissions, driveline, HVAC, electrical systems, and brakes, and you may mentor junior technicians. The role requires a high school diploma or equivalent and a diesel technology diploma is preferred; ASE and DOT certifications are highly valued.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Technical Diploma from a Diesel Technology program preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and repair engines, transmissions, driveline, HVAC, electrical, and brakes.
  • Perform in-depth diagnostic and repairs on engines, transmission, driveline, HVAC, electrical, suspension, lighting systems, body panels, brakes and air systems.
  • Perform light trailer body repairs including doors, tires, lighting system.
  • Mentor and train Tech I and II as needed.
  • Identify and obtain replacement parts as needed.
  • Drive trucks and yard jockey trailers in and out of shop.
  • Perform DOT inspections and complete DOT forms.
  • Prepare tractors for next driver with open seat inspections.
  • Perform 90-day lease operator inspections.
  • Perform basic maintenance on tractors and trailers.
  • Check vehicle fluids.
  • Change vehicle tires.
  • Grease mechanical parts.
  • Maintain productive work pace.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What You’ll Do

Tests, services, and repairs tractors, trailers and related mechanical components.

  • Perform in-depth diagnostic and repairs on engines, transmission, driveline, HVAC, electrical, suspension, lighting systems, body panels, brakes and air systems etc.
  • Perform light trailer body repairs including doors, tires, lighting system etc.
  • Act as a mentor and trainer to Tech I and II’s as needed.
  • Identify and obtain necessary replacement parts as needed to execute repairs.
  • Drive trucks and yard jockey trailers in and out of shop before and after repairs.
  • Repair/replace bolts on body parts such as hoods and cab extenders.
  • Perform DOT inspections as outlined in USX guidelines; accurately complete DOT forms and all other forms of documentation in timely fashion.
  • Perform open seat inspections to prepare tractor for next driver.
  • Perform 90-day lease operator inspections.
  • Perform basic or minor repairs and inspections on brakes, tires, wiring etc.
  • Perform basic and routine preventative maintenance on tractors and trailers as outlined in USX PM guidelines.
  • Check vehicle fluids (e.g. transmission, oil, windshield wiper, antifreeze, etc.).
  • Change vehicle tires.
  • Grease mechanical parts.
  • Clean and maintain work area on a daily basis.
  • Maintain a high level of productivity and be able to work within or better than SRT times.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
What We’re Looking For
Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Technical Diploma from an accredited Diesel Technology preferred.
Experience
  • Minimum of 7 years of tractor and trailer experience required.
  • A Technical Diploma from an accredited Diesel Technology Program may substitute for 1 year of the required experience.
  • Experience in the transportation industry a plus.
Skills/Certifications
  • ASE Certifications preferred.
  • DOT, AC, and brake certifications required.
  • Advanced welding skills required.
  • Proficiency in using OEM websites for diagnostic repairs.
  • Valid Driver’s License required.
  • Basic computer skills required.
  • Ability to read and write.
  • Must be consistently capable of independently analyzing and safely resolving mechanical problems.
  • Must provide own hand tools that is adequate to perform job functions.
  • OEM Online Certifications preferred.
Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stoop to 30” minimum and kneel to 18” minimum
  • Ability to frequently climb 51’ with one 24” step and pull full body weight.
  • Ability to frequently climb stairs 24” without a hand hold rail.
  • Ability to pull self up ladder with 4x17”steps with upper body pull.
  • Ability to constantly go in/out of truck on 51” and one 24” step pulling full body weight.
  • Ability to frequently go up and down ramp.
  • Ability to occasionally push 250 lbs, pull 125 lbs, frequently push/pull 100/50 lbs and constantly push/pull 50/25 lbs.
  • Ability to occasionally carry, lift overhead, high, low and medium lift 51/75 lbs, frequently 50/21 lbs and constantly 20/1 lbs.
  • Must be able to perform all physical requirements with reasonable accommodation.
