Job summary

Penn Medicine, University of Pennsylvania Health System is hiring a Technician II for the patient-family care team. This role involves providing essential care and emotional support to patients while collaborating with clinical professionals.

The Technician II will be responsible for assisting patients' daily needs, managing vital signs, and following strict infection control practices. Candidates should hold a Certified Nurse Aid certification and a H.S. Diploma/GED. Experience in an acute care facility is preferred.

Job description

Tech II in the PCU

One shift a week, 6:00pm - 6:30am (every third weekend Sat and Sun included, holiday rotation).

As a Technician II, you will be a key member of the patient‑family care team, supporting clinical and customer service standards under the direction of a Registered Nurse.

Responsibilities
  • Provide care and assistance in activities of daily living (nutrition, hygiene, elimination) and emotional support.
  • Offer patient‑family centered care with consideration of growth and development.
  • Support unit initiatives for patient safety: maintain quiet environment, hourly rounds, falls prevention, etc.
  • Process patient care orders and reports accurately and promptly.
  • Educate patients and families before examinations, procedures, and during procedures such as 12‑Lead EKG, blood draws, wound care.
  • Take measurements (vital signs, weight, intake/output) and perform basic cardiac monitoring troubleshooting.
  • Assist with transport, transfer, repositioning, mobilizing patients safely using proper body mechanics and Safe Patient Handling.
  • Follow infection control and prevention practices, use standard precautions and PPE.
  • Collect and label specimens (blood, urine, stool, sputum) per protocol.
  • Communicate patient flow and unit information to RN and interdisciplinary team timely.
  • Restock supplies, remove outdated items, perform equipment QC.
  • Inventory patient belongings at admission, transfer, discharge.
  • Serve as preceptor and mentor for new employees.
Credentials
  • Certified Nurse Aid (required); Certified Nursing Assistant preferred.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support.
  • CPR (must obtain if not held at time of hire).
Education / Equivalent Experience
  • H.S. Diploma/GED (required).
  • Experience at an acute care facility or student nurse with hospital‑based clinical experience.
