Job summary

Charles River Laboratories is seeking an entry-level Technician 1 – Histology for the 1stShift Pathology Services Team in Mattawan, MI. This training role covers tissue handling, embedding, microtomy, slide preparation, staining, inventory, quality control, and shipping under close supervision.

The pay for this position is $20.00 USD/hr, with opportunities to develop foundational GLP-compliant laboratory skills within a collaborative team environment.

Qualifications

• Education: High school diploma or GED required. Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) in a biological science preferred.
• Certification/Licensure: None unless required by local government.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities to achieve goals.
• Computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
• Ability to follow safety procedures and read/understand safety documents.

Responsibilities

• Perform tissue processing and packaging duties, including debridement, dissection, cutting, cleaning, disinfection, sizing, and cryopreservation.
• Embed tissue in paraffin and assist with post-processing decontamination of equipment and room.
• Prepare data and documents for pathologist review.
• Ensure welfare and humane care for animals and maintain good laboratory practices.
• Train in onboarding skills and learn to handle tissues, embedding, trimming, and staining.
• Work extended hours and meet time constraints as required.

Job Description

Performs aspects of tissue processing (debridement, dissection, cutting, cleaning and disinfection, sizing, assessing), and aspects of packaging and preservation of tissue products (confirmation of sizing, quality, packaging materials, cryopreservation, etc.). Prepares testing equipment and assists with preventative maintenance. Embeds and/or re-embeds processed tissue in paraffin. Performs post-processing decontamination of equipment and the processing room according to current procedures and protocols. May prepare and organize written data, printouts, and other documents for pathologist review.

• Ensure good welfare and humane care for all animals worked with through gentle, positive human-animal interactions.
• Train in on‑boarding skills which may include handling tissues and organs, trimming tissues, embedding, measuring organ weights; microtomy, slide preparation, staining; inventory and quality control, and shipping of tissues. Specific skills will be based on each area’s training plan and business needs.
• Collect, document, review, and verify data on forms, or in electronic data capture systems.
• Review documentation of functions performed as part of quality control requirements.
• Use and maintain instrumentation and equipment.
• Learn and know anatomic terms.
• Receive, track, and prepare samples or materials, as required for department.
• Perform all other related duties as assigned.
• Education:High school diploma or General Education Degree (G.E.D.) required.Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) or equivalent in a biological science,preferred.
• Certification/Licensure:None, unless required by local government.

• Ability to work extended hours beyond normal work schedule to include, but not limited to evenings, weekends, extended shifts, and/or extra shifts, sometimes on short notice.
• Ability to work under specific time constraints.
