Job summary

MIT Lincoln Laboratory is seeking a laboratory assistant to support a tactical satellite communications group. You will assist with assembling electronics, RF components, and mechanical elements, and test for correct performance according to procedures.

The role involves learning to operate diverse test equipment, document procedures, and help maintain lab spaces. Some lifting and occasional field travel may be required, with a strong emphasis on safety and precision.

  • Graduation from a two-year day technical school or its equivalent in applicable experience.

  • Assist in laboratory or research work under supervision of scientific personnel or technicians of higher grade.
  • Integrate prebuilt digital components, RF system components, cabling, and mechanical elements and test for correct functionality and/or performance based on established test procedures.
  • Fabricate and assemble electronics and mechanical components from schematics and drawings.
  • Provide support to organizing and maintaining laboratory spaces and test equipment.
  • Eagerness to learn highly technical equipment, procedures and techniques.
  • Some light-to-moderate chassis and equipment lifting up to a maximum of 60 pounds and occasional travel to field sites.

Job description

The Tactical Satellite Communications Group is involved in a synergistic combination of research, proof-of-concept test beds, and system engineering/application efforts focused on the goals of enhancing the capacity, the robustness to interference, and the flexibility of future generations of communications satellites.

Current research is concentrating on the design and performance of advanced waveforms, machine learning applied to communications, signal geolocation, Alt-PNT, non-linear operation in saturation, beamforming for novel array types, robust acquisition and tracking techniques, dynamic resource-allocation protocols.

Promising research results are verified in hardware/software proof-of-concept implementations that provide quantitative performance data as well as complexity information.

The group's system engineering activities apply new concepts and technologies to specific communications programs in the national interest.

Job Description:

  • Must be able to work for periods of time without supervision.
  • Will integrate prebuilt digital components, RF system components, cabling, and mechanical elements and test for correct functionality and/or performance based on established test procedures.
  • Will fabricate and assemble electronics and mechanical components from schematics and drawings.
  • Will provide support to organizing and maintaining laboratory spaces and test equipment.

Requirements:

Graduation from a two-year day technical school or its equivalent in applicable experience is the minimum experience requirement.

Desired Skills:
  • Familiarity with electronics test equipment such as oscilloscope, spectrum analyzers, and other equipment to measure electrical performance
  • Familiarity with writing and/or using software scripts to execute tests and performance measurements
  • Familiarity or experience with using 3D printing equipment
  • Ability to generate drawings and/or documentation to document test procedures and configurations

Hiring Range: $33.18 - $37.73
