Job summary

FM Industries, Inc. is looking for a Technical Writer to maintain manufacturing documentation and ensure successful product transitions. Your leadership in safety and writing expertise are valuable as you create detailed product manuals.

You will work in the manufacturing environment while adhering to safety regulations and guidelines. A BS degree and technical writing experience are key for this role.

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The Product Development Technical Writer is responsible for authoring and maintaining design, manufacturing, and process control documents to ensure successful product transition from concept to production.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Develops and controls all product build instructions and manuals (part specific).
  • Accountable to ensure all instructions and manuals are written with the six-sigma philosophy – DFSS.
  • Provides leadership for safety and the environment.
  • Ensures successful completion of assigned project phases within the budgeted time.
  • Comply with applicable environmental, health and safety laws and regulations, Company policy and accepted safe work practices.
  • Understand the importance of designing, building, and operating safe systems. Basic knowledge and understanding of basic safety work processes such as JSA’s and MOC’s.
  • Demonstrate commitment in the successful EH&S management of chemical processes and facilities.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned.
  • Comply with applicable environmental, health and safety laws and regulations, Company policy and accepted safe work practices.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • BS in English or Technical field or 4-7 years’ occupational experience.
  • 1-5 years of technical writing experience in semiconductor, aerospace, medical or automotive manufacturing industry
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Semiconductor industry experience and manufacturing/process knowledge strongly desired.
  • Engineering/Manufacturing background desired.
  • Working knowledge of SolidWorks Composer or similar technical publication software desired.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS WHILE PERFORMING THE JOB:

  • Standing and/or sitting for extended periods of time, walking, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, or bending to the floor.
  • Occasionally lifting and/or moving items up to 40 pounds.
  • Close vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to differentiate shades and color to identify coating defects.
  • Near acuity or accommodation required for reading instrumentation and documentation, dial and digital gauges, blueprints, and precision measuring instruments used in the inspection of coating operations.
  • Ability to handle delicate parts.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT OF THE JOB:

  • Regularly exposed to moving equipment, mechanical parts, ovens, and risk of burns.
  • Occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock.
  • High noise levels from operating machines.
  • The employee will be required to use personal protective equipment (PPE) to prevent exposure to hazardous materials commonly used in a manufacturing environment (i.e., safety glasses and shoes, gloves, ear plugs/covers, mask, cleanroom suit).
  • Low noise levels in office environment.
  • High noise levels while working near operating machines.
  • Physical hazards while working near moving equipment and mechanical parts.
  • Possible breathing of fumes, odors, dust, and mist.
