Job summary

Voyager Technologies is seeking a detail‑oriented Technical Writer to create, maintain, and control a comprehensive library of regulatory, operational, and safety‑critical documentation for energetics manufacturing. The role reports to the Quality Manager and is based onsite in Penrose, Colorado.

You will develop SOPs, hazard analyses, MSDS/TDPs, and quality records, collaborating with R&D, Production, and QA. Strong English writing and document control skills are essential.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Technical Communication, English, Journalism, Chemistry, Engineering, or a related field; OR associate’s degree with a minimum of 4 years of directly relevant technical writing experience in a regulated manufacturing environment in lieu of a Bachelor's degree
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in technical writing within a manufacturing, defense, chemical, or similarly regulated industrial environment
  • Demonstrated experience writing SOPs, work instructions, or regulatory documentation in a compliance‑driven setting
  • Exceptional written English communication skills; ability to produce clear, concise, and unambiguous technical prose
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio) and document management or controlled document software systems
  • Working knowledge of document control principles and revision history management
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident; must be able to pass a federal background investigation consistent with ATF and applicable DoD requirements (18 U.S.C. § 842)

Responsibilities

  • Author, revise, and maintain SOPs, work instructions, batch records, traveler documents, and process control documents for all energetic and non‑energetic manufacturing operations
  • Develop and update hazard analysis documents including Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs), and Explosive Safety Site Plans (ESSPs) in coordination with safety personnel
  • Produce and revise Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), Technical Data Packages (TDPs), and product specifications as required by customer or regulatory demand
  • Support the Quality Management System (QMS) by documenting quality procedures, nonconformance reports (NCRs), Corrective Action / Preventive Action (CAPA) records, and internal audit findings
  • Collaborate with R&D Engineers, Production Engineers, Quality Engineers, and QA Inspectors to ensure documentation accurately reflects current validated processes in a standardized format
  • Assist with creation and formatting of First Article Inspection Reports (FAIRs) and associated quality records
  • Develop and revise employee training materials, visual aids, and competency assessments covering explosive safety, handling procedures, PPE requirements, and regulatory compliance topics in a standardized format
  • Coordinate with supervisors and subject matter experts to ensure training content accurately reflects current SOPs and regulatory requirements; maintain training records in coordination with HR and the Safety department
  • Interface regularly with engineers, chemists, safety officers, quality personnel, and production supervisors to gather technical information and verify document accuracy
  • Participate in document review cycles, incorporating feedback from cross‑functional subject matter experts while maintaining document integrity and clarity
  • Communicate document status, revision schedules, and compliance deadlines to department managers

The Technical Writer for Voyager Technologies is responsible for creating, maintaining, and controlling a comprehensive library of regulatory, operational, and safety‑critical documentation in support of energetics manufacturing operations.

The position reports to the Quality Manager and is part of the Quality Department based in Penrose, Colorado. This role is onsite at Penrose, Colorado.

In this role, the essential functions are:

Documentation Development & Control

  • Author, revise, and maintain SOPs, work instructions, batch records, traveler documents, and process control documents for all energetic and non‑energetic manufacturing operations.
  • Develop and update hazard analysis documents including Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs), and Explosive Safety Site Plans (ESSPs) in coordination with safety personnel.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior exposure to explosives, pyrotechnics, propellants, ammunition, or defense manufacturing
  • Familiarity with regulatory frameworks including ATF 27 CFR Part 555, DoD Explosives Safety standards (DoD 6055.09‑M), OSHA 29 CFR 1910.119 (PSM), and GHS/HazCom requirements

Physical and/or Government Mandated Requirements

  • Ability to lift, move or carry items or equipment up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl for extended periods in an outdoor industrial environment
  • Ability to work in a high‑hazard explosive manufacturing environment with exposure to heat, cold, noise, dust, and explosives
  • Ability to wear required PPE, including flame‑resistant clothing and other safety equipment, and comply with site‑specific requirements such as end‑of‑day showering
  • Ability to obtain and maintain State and Federal explosives licenses
  • Candidates must meet all eligibility requirements to obtain and maintain applicable state and federal explosives licenses, including minimum age requirements (21 and over), a drug‑free workplace in compliance with the Drug‑Free Workplace Act of 1988 (41 U.S.C. §§ 8101–8106), Executive Order 12564 (Drug‑Free Federal Workplace), applicable Department of Defense directives including DoD Instruction 1010.09 and DFARS 252.226‑7003 and successful completion of any legally required background investigations.
  • To conform to U.S. Government export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) (22 CFR Parts 120‑130) and the Export Administration Regulations (EAR) (15 CFR Parts 730‑774), applicants for this position must be a U.S. Person: a U.S. Citizen, a lawful permanent resident of the U.S., or a protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. § 1324b(a)(3). Applicants must be eligible to obtain any required export authorizations from the U.S. Department of State or the U.S. Department of Commerce.

The good faith base salary range for this role is $70,000‑$80,000 at the time of this posting. Where you fall within the range depends on your experience, skills, and location. This range reflects base salary only and does not include benefits or bonus/incentive. This range may be adjusted in the future.
