BRIEF POSTING DESCRIPTION:

The P ID TRAINING Department of the P GENERATION Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 Management vacancy available.(Role: Professional)

JOB FUNCTION:

Identifies training needs, leads, directs, develops, implements and monitors technical training with a focus on operational and/or maintenance activities to ensure employees meet training requirements. Provides training and guidance for the safe, reliable and economic operation of HECO’s generating systems. Ensures employees training is in compliance with all company standards and State and Federal regulations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Training Development - Conducts training needs assessments. Researches, analyzes, develops and evaluates training to ensure company goals and objectives are achieved. Develops evaluation tools and proficiency testing to ensure competency. Documents and updates the department’s training procedures and manuals. Develops and administers development opportunities for succession planning. Coordinates training sessions.
  • On-going Training - Documents and updates the department’s training procedures and manuals. Tracks department training to ensure all aspects of training is current. Oversees various Department training initiatives.
  • Trains employees on new/updated operating procedures. Provides support to others on matters related to the development and implementation of training programs.
  • Develop and provide training material for the implementation of a human performance program within assigned departments of the Power Supply Process Area. Program material should include improving personnel safety, unit availability as well as reduce operating costs.
  • Oversees training for Supervisors and Maintenance Working Foremen. Researches, analyzes, develops and evaluates training for new Shift Supervisors. Develops betterment training for current supervisors. Participates in overhauls, monitors unit start-ups and provides direction as needed. Assists supervisors with trouble shooting and investigating operational and/or maintenance problems.
  • Researches, analyzes, develops, evaluates, coordinates and schedules training for Operator Trainees. Performs administrative functions including: Interviewing & selection, prepares performance appraisals, administers coaching, and maintains department training records.
  • Assists in the development, monitoring and analyzing of the division’s annual training budget.
  • Temporarily substitutes for the Shift Supervisor and/or Maintenance Supervisor as required. This includes enforcement of operating and company polices and labor contracts to achieve consistent and effective operating activities.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge Requirements
  • Thorough knowledge in the operation and maintenance of generating units, electrical system, digital controls systems, switchyards, transmission, distribution and substation facilities.
  • Knowledge of human performance behavior and methods to mitigate error
  • Knowledge of operating and maintenance policies and operating emergency corrective procedures.
  • Working knowledge of personal computers and/or mainframe systems and related software applications.
  • Knowledge of the requirements for compliance with State and Federal environmental and safety regulations.
  • Knowledge of Continuous Improvement processes including:
    • Participate on continuous improvement teams
    • Learn and apply basic LEAN toolsLearn and practice problem solving
    • Follow and improve standard work
Skills Requirements
  • Demonstrated leadership skills including effective written, oral and listening communication skills; conflict resolution skills; the willingness and ability to train.
  • Supports two-way communications to ensure a focused well informed workforce. Promotes teamwork and self-directed workforce to support company initiatives
  • Able to read, comprehend and utilize technical publications such as manufacturer’s instruction manuals, unit data books, blueprints and piping and instrument diagrams.
  • Troubleshooting skills to determine operating and maintenance problems with the units and equipment.
  • Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
  • Ability to handle difficult or sensitive issues while using tact, courtesy, and discretion.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Hawaii or another U.S. state. Must meet the standards for driving positions stated in the Hiring Standards for Driving Positions policy. These standards may be adjusted periodically to meet business and safety needs.
  • Must be able to work various shifts.
Experience Requirements
  • Multiple years (5-7) of operational and/or maintenance related experience in an electric utility or equivalent.
  • Several (3-5) years of experience in analyzing, developing and/or implementing technical training programs desired.
  • A few years (1-2) of related work experience in a supervisory/leadership capacity.
  • A few years (1-2) of related experience in preparing operating budgets and managing expenses preferred.
  • A few years (1-2) experience training peers or subordinates.
  • Qualified or capable of qualifying as a Shift Supervisor, and possess supervisory/leadership skills and abilities to work with a variety of individuals in a power plant setting preferred
