Overview

GAI Consultants is currently seeking a Technical Specialist 3 to work in the Power Delivery Substation Department. The successful candidate will work on various substation engineering projects, including detailed design for high‑voltage substation projects from 12 kV through 500 kV. Responsibilities
  • Perform detailed design of low to extra‑high‑voltage substations and switchyards
  • Develop and/or revise existing drawings for one‑line, physical arrangement, electrical schematics, electrical wiring diagrams, grounding, conduit and wire schedules, bill of materials, site development, battery sizing, and equipment layout, including coordinating with CAD operators to develop organized, quality CAD drawings
  • Integrate physical layout and design of substations to interface with protection and control drawings or vice versa
  • Develop control and relay panel layouts including assembling the specifications
  • Create project criteria
  • Develop design specifications including the overall bill of materials
  • Design and size auxiliary systems including AC/DC load centers as well as batteries and chargers
  • Design and size conduit, cable, and backup generators
  • Travel to client and vendor offices for design reviews
  • Assist with the technical development of the scope of services and cost estimates for substation and P & C projects
Technical Responsibilities
  • Supports design of a complete project, system, component, or process
  • Occasionally prepares complete plans, specifications, and other project documents
  • Supports design work in both independent and team‑oriented environments
Project and Task Management
  • Occasionally plans and coordinates detailed aspects of the engineering work
  • Occasionally prepares scopes, budgets, and schedules for assignments
  • Assists with proposals to provide professional services or obtain funding for engineering projects
Management Responsibility
  • Receives general direction on key objectives and guidance on unconventional/complex problems, direction on modified techniques, and new approaches on assignments with conflicting criteria
  • Occasionally attends project meetings and presents specific aspects of engineering assignments
Communication Skills
  • Communicates effectively to both technical and nontechnical audiences

  • Familiarity with substation design
