THE ROLE
Reporting to the Manager of Enterprise Data Systems, Belay is looking for someone who thinks in systems, communicates across boundaries, and gets things done with the tools available — not just the ones they already know.
This is not a traditional backend engineering role, and you do not need to arrive as an expert in every integration technology. It is a role for someone who can understand how information should move between systems, investigate why that movement breaks down, and build a reliable solution using the most appropriate tools—whether that means low-code configuration, an API, a webhook, a file exchange, a data pipeline, or a small amount of custom code.
It is also not only an integrations role. You will own projects from the first conversation with the people who need them through launch and ongoing support, and you will care about how what you build works for the people who use it, not just whether the data is correct.
If you have ever untangled a process that crossed multiple systems, figured out why two applications disagreed, or built a practical solution without being given a complete set of instructions, this role was written for you.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Own projects end to end: scope the problem with stakeholders, define success, plan the work, build, test, launch, and support what you ship.
- Design and build user-facing solutions, such as workflows, dashboards, forms, and internal tools, shaped by how people actually work.
- Talk to the people who will use what you build, gather feedback early and often, and iterate until the solution fits.
- Configure and maintain integrations with laboratory systems, EHR platforms (such as Epic), payer services, CRM platforms, SaaS applications, file-transfer locations, and other external services.
- Build both scheduled data flows and real-time or on-demand connections using low-code tools, APIs, webhooks, file exchanges, or lightweight code.
- Work with operations, laboratory, clinical, commercial, and finance teams to understand how information should move between their systems.
- Translate business requirements and external system documentation into clear data mappings, workflow steps, and validation rules.
- Transform structured and semi-structured data - including tables, files, and JSON - into formats that downstream systems can use reliably.
- Monitor integration health, troubleshoot failures, and communicate impact and resolution status clearly.
- Work with vendors and internal teams to clarify ambiguous requirements and resolve differences between documented and actual system behavior.
- Test new integrations with controlled data, and with real users where applicable, before production use and verify behavior after release.
- Document configurations, mappings, dependencies, support procedures, and important technical decisions.
- Grow into helping define reusable integration patterns and broader system architecture as the platform and your expertise expand.
PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL CHARACTERISTICS
- Ownership mentality: you drive work to completion, keep stakeholders informed, and don't wait to be told what to do next.
- A sense of user experience: you think about who will use a solution, what they are trying to get done, and where they will get stuck.
- Strong critical thinking and an instinct for structured problem-solving—you can break an end-to-end process into systems, steps, inputs, outputs, and failure points.
- Comfort learning new tools fast — including AI-assisted development tools (Cursor, Copilot, Claude, etc.). You don't need to know every platform; you need to be able to figure it out.
- Practical judgment about when to use configuration, low-code tools, AI-assisted development, or custom code.
- Ability to understand data structures and trace information across multiple applications without needing to be a deeply specialized software engineer.
- Exceptional communication skills — written and verbal. You can explain a technical concept to someone who doesn't work in data, and you can hold your own in a room with engineers.
- Cross-functional instincts: you understand that your job is to make other people's work easier, and you approach collaboration with that in mind.
- Attention to detail and a bias toward accuracy, especially in regulated or compliance-adjacent environments.
- Persistence when troubleshooting problems that span multiple systems and do not have an obvious owner.
- Willingness to flag risks early, ask clarifying questions, and document assumptions rather than quietly guessing.
QUALIFICATIONS
- 2–4 years of experience in systems integration, data operations, business systems, implementation consulting, software support, data engineering, application development, or a related field.
- Experience owning a project, tool, or process improvement from request through delivery and support.
- Ability to read, understand, and work with structured data, even without extensive programming experience.
- Experience analyzing a business process or technical workflow that crosses more than one application or team.
- Experience troubleshooting technical or data-related problems in a methodical way.
- Familiarity with the software development lifecycle, including requirements, testing, release, and production support.
- Experience organizing work and communicating progress, open questions, risks, and next steps.
- Demonstrated ability to learn new technical tools independently.
NICE TO HAVE
- Experience building internal tools, dashboards, or applications for non-technical users, or exposure to UX or product design practices such as user interviews, wireframing, or usability testing.
- Exposure to Palantir Foundry or similar low-code data platforms.
- Exposure to APIs, webhooks, JSON, SFTP, cloud storage, or file-based data exchange.
- Experience with low-code integration, workflow automation, or enterprise data platforms.
- Familiarity with API-testing or technical troubleshooting tools.
- Experience with data transformation, including nested JSON, structured versus unstructured data, or inconsistent source formats.
- Exposure to LIMS, ELN, CRM, ERP, billing, eligibility, payer, or other enterprise systems.
- Experience in healthcare, diagnostics, biotechnology, laboratory operations, or another regulated environment.
- Familiarity with healthcare data or transaction standards such as HL7, FHIR, or X12.
- Awareness of HIPAA, PHI handling, audit trails, or controlled production changes.
- Experience using AI-assisted development tools such as Cursor, Copilot, Claude, or similar products.
